Owners manuals and general q`s
Hello, totally new person here, planning an adventure to tibet. Was going to buy a Land-rover but then this x-military mercedes g 240gd showed up and well, we have fallen in love with it and are now the proud new owners.
Thing is we need as much advice on car repair and what goes wrong with these babies as possible. I wouldnt want to have to leave it in Lhasa and fly back, I want to drive a different route back with thiscar.
We have no manuals that I can easily read, it being a Norwegian army car the books that were with it are being sold by the owner seperately (army surplus dealer) and he wants alot of money for something I cannot read. I have seen a 1981 manual for the 240gd, but is that ok for the 86èr?
Any other advice sorely welcome, we are heading off in the spring, and our web-page is www.drivingtolhasa.com
Thanks :D

Hello again , the 240GD is a not seen alot in the UK most are 300GD .
weak spots , front wheel bearings , hoses to oil cooler if fitted on a 240gd replace with flexy hydrulic hose .
Im guessing its 24 volt if thats the case do some reserch to find out what truck i.e 24 volt components will interchange.
try not to run massive tyres as you will have problems, BFG all terrain are a good choce as you will be doing a lot of road miles .
as for a manual thay do come up on ebay evey now and then but it wont cover a military spec 240GD .
hope it helps
log onto the site linked below the US G owners may be able to help ,

A pleasure..welcome to the GWOA!
Hi there. From what I can gather from your website you must be Jason.
First of all, any manual that I have seen is of the civilian models, not the military. This is not really an issue for anything except the electrics (as pointed out your G runs on 24 volts whereas all the civilian models run on 12v) given that things like the engines, gearboxes, transfer cases, axles and steering are shared.
The Piel de Toro website is now down, but when it will be back, you will find a user's manual for the Puch 230 GE, the military version of the G used by the Swizz army. The manual is in German and French.
I have seen a 1981 manual for the 240gd, but is that ok for the 86èr?
Yes, mechanics should be exactly the same. Like people said above, electrics will be a little different due to 24vMILspec.
If you don't mind buying from the US go to Haralds site (he is the expert). Great manuals to be had.

Or you can use this little trick:
Go to MB main dealer and say you want to order this part:
4605841196
With a bit of luck, you will receive a shiny new 240GD manual in English 8)
You may have to try more than one dealer/parts sales person, as some are more "enlightened" than others...
Good Luck
Nice trick! would you happen to know the number for the 300GD manual?
Thank you
Richard
Yes, same number - covers both.
Check how much they want. If it is ridiculous, I'll scan mine...
Thanks Mercfan, I'll trot off to the MB-dealer now and see how much they are.
cheers
Richard
Well, according to local MB-dealer that partnumber doesn't exist, and even if it did exist they wouldn't be able to order it as it a workshop manual.
I didn't tell them that at first!
don't think the guy who served me had a clue to be honest, the usual guy was off, might try him next week.
Thanks for the partnumber
cheers

Hi I have the pre microfilm exploded views manual for 460 series chassis and body components 200ge 230g/ge.280ge.240d.250d.300d.identified by chassis number body transmission transfer case front and rear axle steering with microfiche locator numbers..totals 488 pages. could possibly copy relevant pages to suit your problems. unfortunately no wiring diagrams. all in five languages.
Thanks for the kind offer!
I am not looking for anything in particular because at the moment my G appears to be fine (thats done it now!)
I would like a full manual as I have very limited mechanical knowledge and even less experience and thought it would help me if I could read about the things I might have to do to my G in nice easy steps.
Thanks again
Richard
thank you, good advice. we are running all weather norwegian tyres, not big off-roaders! came with the car so i think we are ok..
it is 24volt, so some research is needed, thanks
seen a 1981 manual for sale, wondered if i should buy it?
thanks again
