Look at the power and torque figures for the Toyota Landcruiser 200 V8 biturbo diesel engine in the article below:

Given Toyota's reputation for build quality and reliability, this might be the replacement for my ageing G!

Unfortunately this is tempting to me. They may not have the looks, but after crossing Mozambique from North to South in a Cruiser just after the war (some of them didn't know it was over), I can assure you that a Cruiser is capable and tough. It didn't look to good afterwards, but it did drive more than 1000 miles off-road due to us being scared of landmines. The only trouble (with the car) was tyres, 9 in total.

I'll probably always have a G, or rather my wife will, but it may have to share the drive with a Cruiser.

yes you are right that toyotas are tough but you'll be back mark my word!
the only downside to the G lack of power but an engine conversion soon eliminates its only downfall.Imagine crossing Mozambique in that G560 that howard sold recently.IS PETROL CHEAP OUT THERE?

So, I keep the Pinzgauer and the 300GEL [to travel to Morocco] and buy one of these? -

Agree G-wagen is has unique appeal, particularly utilitarian shape / styling, but so underpowered and so LHD!

Landcruisers appear to be as robust, now going to come with superb diesel engine and available in RHD.

Well guys i know where you are all coming from, but i am sure those toyota owners have a few things to say about their own vehicle problems. As they say the grass is always greener on the other side.
You guys keep raving on about the new toyota diesel engines, but you should follow the latest mercedes info on the constant development of our marque in all aspects.
I AM A TRUE LOYALIST TO "MERCEDES BENZ" since i was 6 years old when my dad had his first mercedes. Also being a MB-CLUBOWNERS MEMBER (the oldest in the world) i follow all aspects of the marquethrough a monthly magazine which i highly advise you guys join aswell.I think being loyal to the marque is a good way of developing a stronger devotion to the G. (I HOPE I HAVENT COME OVER TOO STRONG GUYS!!)

Well, may god never lead us astray from the right path....
G alternative could only be a Unimog, which could however lead to a divorce!!How big is the Pinzgauer in comparison to the G and king off roader Unimog.

Re: Might this tempt you away from a G-wagen?

Before I found my 463 I was tempted to stray from the righteous path! (I have 1st hand experience of using and really abusing Hi Lux’s). They just don’t break.
To the extent that I test drove an immaculate Landcruiser, huge wad of bills and comprehensive main dealer service history, 170K miles. It looked to have been pretty pampered throughout its life.
However compared to my 463 192K miles it drove like a sack of very sloppy s***. Everything was just loose, very disappointing, but then it was less than half the price of the 463 :(

Re: Might this tempt you away from a G-wagen?

Do any of you guys not subscribe to the view of the purist Mercedes owners who will not buy any merc after the takeover by Chrysler? So the G? Perhaps the pre-Crysler G is the one worth having?

I have heard it said by the aforementioned purists that if you want a car with modern electrics etc. then buy Japanese as they are far superior to their European counterparts. So maybe if buying new then go Japanese i.e. in this case Toyota but if staying with the G get the Real ones not the Chrysler version... or am I wrong?

Re: Might this tempt you away from a G-wagen?

I think your right in that unfortunatley electronics and gadgets are marketing ploys and the japs are bloody good at that, who needs turning fog lights on a G?
If thats the case, buy an S-CLASS,or LEXUS
I will be honest, when i was out looking for a G recently i was keen on a 463 only because to me it looks neater externally without being feminine,i was never bothered with the interior and 3 diff locks etc.I had a 463 300 GES in cyprus and yes it was smoother than a 460 diesel but not smoother than my C-CLASS at the time.THAN it had a few elctronic problems which in the end made me sell the vehicle and that was an early model, the newer ones are more fused and relayed!!!I now look more at the classic and late/early mercedes models purely for what they are"OVER ENGINEERED SCULPTURES.

Re: Might this tempt you away from a G-wagen?

I would never buy a post 1999 GWagen if I can afford something else.

As for the rest of Mercedes, anything made after 1999 is a load of manure in my book. The pinnacle of Mercedes engineering was the W124, and W140 and I could own a W202 or W210 but nothing never than that.

Re: Might this tempt you away from a G-wagen?

i will add that my mum has a 1998 slk, as you said pre 2000, and the thing is built like a brick **** house! i think they must of over engineered it on purpose so that it couldnt get slated.

my dad, may jesus forgive him, bought a brand new ml in 2000 and had so many troubles with it, even though it is nice to drive on road, he still regrets it.

mercedes are supposed to be returning to their previous build quality, but who knows, it could all be pr

You have over looked one aspect jesus, but i am not easily offended my friend."AMG"......
I own a W209 55 Cabrio and believe me even the doors shut differently!!
They really are in a different league in all aspects, and looking in autotrader seem to offer great value for money.Ahh.. jesus am i right in seeing you in mercedes enthusiast magazine when you first left the uk? I am sure you was driving an AMG,a C-CLASS?
