I don't know for sure, but I expect they put a restraint on it for the winter don't they? If only to preserve the surface. Only a wild guess. :?

Re: Last drive of The Gap

I’m new to laning so don’t know all the “in’s & Out’s” but the way I understand it is, that due to a change of legislation, many of the lanes in Wales will no longer be accessible by vehicles come the end of November. The Gap has a seasonal TRO from the end Oct to March, so this will be the last weekend to drive it. Ever!

I think that’s right :?

It's gotta be worth the trip for the view.

:D Dates for " The Gap " are below , its not a hard drive but the view is fantastic .

both pics below are the gap..

The NERC bill comes into effect in Wales on the 14 November 2007 a lot of the classic lanes will be gone forever

Although sometimes you can't see the view, it's still a good drive.

Re: Last drive of The Gap

how many of these lanes are they closing?

there was a good comment by clarkson last week, he said that when he went up that mountain in the discovery they were flooded with letter protesting about damage to the environment, but hes been watching autumn watch and bill oddie and co have been driving about in 4x4s in the countryside and had not one complaint! it seems that as long as your looking for animals its fine!

for those whom arnt fully au fait with the whole 'off roading ' thing and storm thats been brewing , google 'NERC' and have a look on any of the 'off road' orientated sites. its VERY complicated with lots of ins and outs BUT the very, very basics are we lose the right to drive everything except BOATS!

Re: Last drive of The Gap

Yeah,
And quite right too, a pile of ? ? ? ? ? hacking about through property that is not their's, nor do most of them repair the damage so caused, I have no particular time for the "greenies" but on this issue they may well be more right than wrong. Go to a Pay and Play" site with your 4WD.
Nor do I support the "right" to roam nonsense, especially when the landowner bears the risk of the ensuing litigation for "injuries"
This opinion is probably based more on reading some of the drivel published in landrover magazines.
However,
If you want to PLAY , Please PAY.
Cheers,
Marcus
Oh aye, Mark. I have not read any since purchasing a "G". ( obviousley )

 Perhaps you should give up the LR mags.

Going laning, and going to pay & play sites are very different hobbies.

Re: Last drive of The Gap

marcus it doesnt just effet 4x4's tho, the motorcycle variation is being turned away too, lots of great races and trails are being closed, the welsh 2day is mostly roadwork now! granted some people take the piss, but as was said, laning and playing is very different.

Re: Last drive of The Gap

Marcus,
I’m surprised at the muted response, I was hoping for more!

I think I have a foot in each camp on this one. Yes I have been green laning (maybe 4 times in 15+ years) and yes I’ve enjoyed it. As have the family.
Have I felt a little uneasy about it all? Yes I have. That could be due to not wanting to be lumped in with the ???????s and noting some the lunatic floor it V8/look at me brigade. Mostly LR but they obviously don’t hold exclusive rights.

A couple of points. My understanding is that green lanes are public highways, maintained (or not) by highway departments. Therefore we already pay.
As they are public highways they are by definition not private. If people hack through property that is not theirs they are not on a green lane/right of way.

My issue with legislation like this is that it is driven by a vocal minority imposing their views / will on others. Are their motives as stated? What’s the hidden agenda? In this instance it’s more likely a generic anti 4X4 assault. Unfortunately the small number of cretins end up provoking this sort of backlash.
What next though?
If these people were serious about saving the environment they should limit each persons access to cheap air flights. But I guess that would cost them votes. Better to go for the photo opportunity next to a wind farm and spout on about it supplying 20% of our energy needs. Who’s actually figured the lie / con trick? Go ask the Dane’s.

Next contradiction. Do I approve of the banning of public smoking? Absolutely, bring it on! But that is the silent majority having their say I guess. Pretty rare!

Re: Last drive of The Gap

Russ,
I agree with you 100%,
Especially re plane fuel not being taxed heavily enough.
I mean TONY is so principled isnt he ?
So what other countries choose to do should not make any difference re taxing avation fuel
Oh and if hunting is cruel, WHAT about fishing,
GOSH we are back to votes again
Cheers,
Marcus

Re: Last drive of The Gap

Well, actually,
Per the Sunday Times, todays edition, one would need a 4WD to negeotiate some of Britains MAIN roads or city streets, let alone the green lanes.
Cheers,
Marcus
