has anyone made/bought/seen any rear window security grills for a long
wheel base G-wagen. they may be fitted from inside or outside and with
a proper dog guard in place one might achieve quite high level of security
at the back. It is a shame land rovers are blessed with so much after market fabrications to improve their cars but at least we are blessed with the cars .
when I travel abroad or even for camping trips I have always felt vulnerable with so much possessions at the back. you cannot simply park your car and go for a walk. i like to hear other members views/recommendations about this .thanks

Well I *think* that you can actually get wire screens to cover your windows which mount on the outside directly from Mercedes. You see them a lot on the police Gs for when they are used in riot scenarios.

The other thing is you could always get your glass laminated so that it makes it more difficult to break.

Re: rear windows security grills

When I had my maintenance business in the UK I had 12 vans, all but 3 were broken in to at some time or other, all 12 had grills (admittedly inside) but they were good ones and dead locks.
I have seen them cut out, kicked out and pushed in using another vehicle they are only as good as the surrounding metal.
Now as a criminal psychologist I go to unsavoury places and carry a fair amount of computor and 'other' sensitive equipment so I personally changed all the rear glass on my LWB for laminated. It took me about 4hrs on a sunday afternoon after having the glass cut by a local glazier. It also has privacy tint.
It would take a huge amount of bashing to get it to allow access :?

Don't just go for laminated glass, it is very strong and difficult to get in, but when we were in France this year they broke into my G right next to my tent. The car wasn't locked, but opening a door make too much noise. They simply cut the rubbers around the window and then lift the whole window out, without a sound. Luckely Martin had a rubber for me.

In Mosambique I have seen many cars with small steel strips screwed over the window rubber at 2/3 places. This prevent them from getting the window out.

The way I would go is laminated glass and steel clips.

Nicholas,
Dont wish to dump on your endevours, but is it not straightforward to "pop" the glazing out complete, it is only held in by a rubber strip, I saw a rear screen removed intact faster than one would have believed ( and "popped" back in again after), keys had been left in vehicle, owner was about to bust side window, OK it was 20 ? 25 ? years ago but "G" technology is that sort of vintage.
However you may have tweaked the fixing method.

Re: rear windows security grills

Having attempted to "pop" the side window out of my G, to replace Christos rubber... I quickly came to respect that rubbers strength!!

It took an absolute age, using multiple levers and prys. All this on a 25 yr old car!! A testament to the quality of materials I guess.

Same thing with rear, Pentagon (My window tinter) gave up, having broken several plastic probes and cut the rubber.

Maybe on lesser cars... not our G's :D

Re: rear windows security grills

when i spoke to pentagon they told me id need new rubbers to tint the windows and they were hard to remove without breaking them. everyother company said that same thing.

how about the wire mesh, but plugging eachone into a car battery, little shock treatment!

Re: rear windows security grills

Yes I did think of the rubber being cut, as I have heard this before but a very high percentage of car crime is opportunist something is seen, smash, gone
I indeed cut my own front windscreen out, even with a stanley knife with brand new blade it was nt easy and took an age.

Also to lever the rubbers from outside is all but impossible, it has to be done from inside and pushed out

Car window tinters want too do the job and go to the next not faff around with removing rubbers thats why they say buy new. I removed and replaced my own in about 4 hrs having tinted the glass already a few days previously to let it dry out.

I always say though if someone really wants to get something they are going to no matter what you do to protect it.

I was really hungry queuing to order my dinner when I saw this big photograph in McDonalds yesterday of a big, juicy quarterpounder with big bold letters under it: "Can you imagine being a vegetarian?" It really put a smile in my face.... I don't really fancy eating in an American burger on a daily basis but I thought the advert was great!

Re: rear windows security grills

I would be inclined to get a heavy tint in rear windows. what they cant see they leave alone.

tints and a very good car alarm. you can get the ones that sense the glass being tampered with and go off and have the anit tilt feature.

or a large dog in the back, friend of ours runs a falconry company and has huge dogs (they were to angry for the police force so he got them) in the vans to keep the guns and birds safe.
