4gear vs 5gear
Hi mates
What's your oppinion about the 280 GE with 4 gear and the 280 with 5 gear.Which do you think is better and why?Is it true that mercedes G with 4 gear is an old-timer truck. If the truck is perfect is there any problem that isn't a 5 gear one?
I will be happy for every given oppinion :D
Thanks
It is commonly believed that the 5-peed is a far weaker gearbox than the 4-speed.
And the "old timer" tag would I presume be referring to the 460 series, selectable 4wd, this built up to 1990, the full time 4wd 463 range from 1991 onwards.
I have a 4 speed diesel ( 1984 ) and a 5 speed diesel ( 1989 ) both 460's, the 4 speed is a much nicer box to use, the 5 speed would be vague / rubbery in gear selection.
The easiest way to tell the difference is that the old 460 range had TWO pull up knobs to engage the difflocks, adj to the selector lever for the transfer box, the 463 however has THREE switches, I know not where located.
Cheers,
Marcus

Sorry Marcus, but he did say 280GE, which was never available in W463.
Aye Mercfan,
I had twigged the model designation, in this particular instance anyway, I was merely trying to explain the model differences wrt. his ref to "old timer". :) I know that I was at first confused by all the model designations etc, still am not entirely up to speed.
Marcus
George,
As mentioned, the 4-speed is more durable and nicer to use than th 5-speed (on a 460 series, anyway).
But with in a 280 GE the gearing is a bit too short in fourth gear (with the 4-speed gearbox, that is), but nothing bigger tyres cannot effectively solve.
As I said in my e-mail to you, if the truck is good, the gearbox should not deter you from buying it.
Good luck
Thank you mates - great info
I am very happy now ,I will be ime-dependet when choosing truck.
Superb oppinions
