speedo cable on a 460 300gd
my speedo has stopped working have checked the speedo by turning seems ok. the cable i loose sight of where does it go to?
Is it an easy job to do,where can i get one from? Cable does turn but not smooth so i think it must be this? thanks michael
The cable is attached to the transfer case. It is a labourious job to replace, if only due to all the places that it has to go through.
You can get the part from any Mercedes dealer. I don't remember it being expensive, but you need to get the right one and that can only happen quoting the VIN of your G to the dealer.
Does the mileometer work? if it does then the fault is inside the speedo itself. I know it's a very basic question but I had to ask it myself as well.
Mileometer has not worked for sometime? Speedo was working ok just stopped working. Speedo does work if you turn it from the back.
Speedo cable movment is lumpy!!
Sorry to be a pain is the transfer case after the gearbox housing. is there a web site to show me
Very easy to see.
Just crawl underneath your G and you will see the transfer case connected to the main gearbox with a very short propshaft. Then two other longer propshafts connecting the transfercase to the rear and front axles.
I think I remember the speedo cable being connected to the back of the transfer case but it could also be the front
It goes in the back yes, but it can be difficult, or rather uncomfortable to undo. The easiest way to find it if you are not sure is to push/feed the cable back from the engine bay. It goes through a million and one plastic tie straps, but it is easy to follow. The worst bit of the job is dried mud or in my case cow s#*t dropping in your eyes. Ring Dave on 07899948742, he might have a 2nd hand one for you.
Speedos for all W460 G-Wagens are all the same. Only in Km/h instead of in mph in the continent
