oil changing disaster......................
Just tried to change the oils in my diffs and i cant get the drain plugs out! anyone and ideas as this is a bit of a worry i also checked the transfer box and they are looking a little chewed too! Can you buy new plugs? Can anybody help???!!!
Cheers Simon
If the worst happens and you cant get the diff drains out you can buy new diff covers from MB quite cheaply. The new ones are also stronger. The pugs are also available.
The best way to free them is to clean out the hole in the plugs and then hammer in a drain plug wrench into the drain plug with a lump hammer nice and hard and attempt to move it with a long breaker bar and it should move: make sure the wrench is properly seated in the plug first.
You need to be more careful with the transfer case though.
Good luck
And copper grease the threads of the new ones
so do the new diff covers have the drain plugs in them as mine are in the side of the casing!?
Cheers simon
I don't think that that will work.
The drain plugs are in the casting of the diff itself, just underneath it.
The filling plugs are in the diff covers, but that's only half of the problem.
I don't see a way around soaking in oil and tapping the key into the plug and moving this one with a long bar!
I took mine to a tyre fitment centre just to loosen them with their pneumatic impact driver; he didn’t even charge me for it.
The original cover was A 601 350 50 21 replaced by A 463 330 00 21 # 26 on the photo
The plug A 352 997 00 32 # 35 two in each cover.
Mine came out easily using a 3 ft breaker bar even though they looked rough.
Yep - the newer 436 ones are supposedly less likely to be damaged by off-road use too and both types have drain and filler plugs.
I'm just about to change the diff oil so can anyone tell me what size drain key will I need to do the job?
It's size 14. Good for the gearbox, transfer case and both differentials.
