overdrive for G wagen
Did you know you can get an overdrive unit for the 460 G wagen. Bolts between gear box on transfer box. for autos as well. So nows the time to fit those V8's and get better economy. :P
where did you get info on this old boy?
any pics/details to share at all?
Please tell us more
i know all about that one peter, we fitted it together, you piqued my interest coz it sounded like you were describing a unit fitted between gear and transfer box.
Well he was ! ! !
fess up, youall,
Marcus
PS
Tanglefoot should perhaps carry a Government Health warning
Hic
The overdive unit is a self contained Laycock unit fitted between the transfer box and the rear axle.
It will only fit the LWB G due to its size, it requires a shorter prop( longer than a SWB prop )
It is bolted directly to the transfer box output flange and thus only opperates on the rear axle.
It has its own crossmeber attached to the chassi to support it with rubber mounts so no vibration.
It has 3 micro switchs to prevent it opperating in 4 wheel drive hi or lo and reverse.
There are two ways of engageing the unit.
Through a speed sensor relay, that gets its signal from a sensor equiped speedo cable it engages and disengages overdrive unit at a predetermined speed also LED opperates to signal that overdrive is opperating. cost a bit but well worth the additional outlay.
Or an on off switch and you decide when Cheap !!
It drops engine speed approx 500 rpm when selected
Unit is robust and quit in opperation.

is there any upto date info on this mod
I suppose it could be the retro fit one near bottom of page. But no idea.
THANKS MARK
sent a email will post repley if and when i get it
I had a very similar unit on a 70's 4 speed range rover
Easier to fit 235.85 x 16 tyres
i am doing just such a job at the moment ,this will give me a 7th super high top gear with a 22% rev drop from the 0.799 top i have at the moment . it will have an electrical interlock so it only operates in 2wd .
That is one very neat looking unit. Pity it won't work for a 463.
you should no, its your mate fireman ronnie
