:?: Has anyone got any experience of deepwater driving with a petrol (280 gel) G wagen? Are there any issues with the petrol pump electric terminals etc? they just look so vulnerable

Fuel pump connections are not an issue. It will carryon working even if completely submersed.

Danger arises if you manage to suck water in to the air intake. This applies equally to diesels of course and equals a knackered engine.

Difficult to explain in words but if you keep a nice steady bow wave in front of you you will be amazed by how deep it will go (I think hand book states 500mm wading depth?). Of course if go in too fast and swamp the high voltage electrics you are stuffed

Shakir, you can have water up to bonnet as long as you create a bow wave pushing water in front of you which sucks water out of engine bay, done this many times. The good thing about you engine is the air intake is right up front just short of the front inner panel so unless you stop and allow the water to fill engine bay then you will have problems.

If the water goes over the bonnet it will travel up to the air intake grill on the bonnet and fill the air intake box for the heater. Makes sure the drain hole is clear to allow water out of the bottom. Its located on the drivers side, get your hand in there and poke your finger through it to make sure its clear as they get debris and leaves etc. Orther wise your floor will fill with water.

However unless you really need to go through deep water dont do it, cant see the attraction as it gets every where you dont want it, including starter motor and gearbox bell housing. Learnt the lesson the hard way in my addolecents.

Re: wading with a 280 gel????????

thanks for the feedback everyone, I would not put my G in water for all the Tea in China but I was just disappointed about the fuel pump connectors, i have just rewired my one and i felt like they are very vulnerable, any way I have applied some grease on the terminals but next time I will use corrosion resistant marine grade spades/rings for the job, that way they will be safer and last longer,
(Hi Ian, any chance for the contact details of the radiatorguy from Acton? )
