Re: Fifth Gear

bascially

- it works, with only the smell being a problem
- you can get the stuff from anywhere, he could get half a tonne a week from one chippy!
- the government are a bunch of greedy wankers and expect you to pay 27.5p a litre to recycle a clean fuel, whereas the rest of europe its free!

he did the test in an old e class diesel, i didnt catch the endine, think it was the 250 tho

Re: Fifth Gear

I've been doing some research of my own. Have a little Corsa 1.7 and it runs like a dream. Tried it in the G once, worked perfect, but I'm a bit cautious with such an expensive engine. I'll wait for others to do more tests.

Re: Fifth Gear

they drove 200 miles, and over 100 on the motorway with no problems at all, and the car had 200k on the clock!

I've done about 10k in the Corsa without problems.

Re: Fifth Gear

Do you know how much it would cost to rebuild a G's engine?

Re: Fifth Gear

fair point. but the engine is tough. how about using the solvent in it to give it a thinner consistency?

Re: Fifth Gear

My main concern is for the long run. what will happen with all the pipes and seals in for instance the diesel pump. Maybe if I've done 20k in the Corsa.

Re: Fifth Gear

The corsa is actually more at risk than the G. Direct injection engines cause the veggie oil to run down the cylinder walls when cold and mix with engine oil. Personally know of quite a number of failed sprinter engines because of this. Hence the advent of twin-tank kits for them.
The OM617 is quite happy on the stuff though(advantage pre-chamber). Know of some that have covered over 100k on the stuff. All you need to do is fit the new type lift pump(approx £30 Bosch) and fuel heater for winter mornings. If you want to play safe, mix in 20% diesel and pay your fuel duties - form and guidance notes available on customs and excise website.

I think I put at least that in my G if not closer to double. And honestly it ran much smoother with it than without.

Re: Fifth Gear

went to an off road event and I could smell chips, approached this Landrover and asked him if he was using chip oil, he smiled and said you noticed then. It does stink. but cheap or what.

Re: Fifth Gear

from a personal nasal perspective the smell of bio/veg oil is strong/noticeable but i reckon its way nicer then the stink from normal pump mineral diesel!!!!!

Couldn't agree more with you Mark! And there is a reason for it. Naphthalene is present nearly a thousand fold more in diesel fumes compared to 50% biodiesel. So with veggie oil, the difference is going to be even bigger.

Healthier, cheaper, no need for wars, yet instead of promoting a healthier environment and saving the lives of our troops, we're getting taxed...

Got the research paper somewhere - might post here if someone wants to see.

Re: Fifth Gear

If it has an indirect injection engine and inline fuel pump, then probably, though I very much doubt it has either, in which case fuel heater and twin-tank system is what you need.

You can do - research WVO (Waste Veggie Oil). But the problem is you need to filter it as there is a lot of water content in WVO not to mention crud.

Supposedly WVO runs even better than SVO (Straight Veggie Oil) as it has been preheated to a high temperature which does something or other to the molecular structural-thingy and makes the whole world smile.

Of course the problem is you need to let it sit for some time before you can use it so that all the crud settles.

If its a hot day you can run veggie oil straight. If its a cold day you need a two tank system to start on fossil diesel ando you need to remember to let you car idle on fossil diesel before switching your engine off so it will purge itself. Otherwise it won't start unless you can preheat your engine.... a hot water kettle does the trick or so I'm told.

There is also something you can add to the fuel to get rid of the chip shop smell. But I don't remember what....

Now after having written all that I just noticed you wrote FIAT... so the answer is probably no. It will work in a G though as many people will attest.

Incidentaly the best fish and chips I've ever had were oddly some many miles from the sea in the very dry and desert oasis environment of Cairo... but failing that Faulkners does an amazing plaice and chips.
