I have a g280 and 500. I run the 500 on super but it says run on min 95 ron. I think in Germany standard unleaded is below 95 ron. I have never heard of a 230 or 280 requiring anything above 95 ron.

Re: 98 ron petrol........................

I seem to remember reading somewhere in the owners manual or MB literature that there is no advantage using the 98 super in G's, only use in high compression engines to stop pre-ignition so definatley use in a G55K but not so important in a standard engine 280 or 300GE.

Yes, that was from the times that there was barely any unleaded petrol and the leaded standards in the continent were 93 and 98 RON.

But with the advent of the unleaded petrol the 95 RON had more antidetonation additives with the result that it can be used on most petrol cars.

Only the very high-tech motors need the modern 98 RON, but I can safely say that all Gs bar the G55 can use 95 RON.

Hi Gas Guzzlers,
I use the standard 92 unleaded fuel here in Australia with a dash of valvesaver fluid and my 280 runs very well with no ping. I tried Optimax and 95 unleaded with no significant difference. The only problem is dirt, dust and water in remote areas outback.

Re: 98 ron petrol........................

Hi Jimmac,

Virtually all M110 (280 GE) engines fitted to Gs have hardened valve seats and would therefore not need any additives to run with unleaded.

Fact is that this engine was fitted to the GWagen with lowered compression and will run on anything over 90 RON petrol.

The M102 (230 GE) is a different kettle of fish. I has higher compression and thus needs at least 95RON.

Cheers
