Advice on gearbox conversion needed.
At last my 230GE has succesfully been converted into a six cylinder 300D.It goes a dream now and returns 320 miles on a full tank;25mpg and thats combined! Now my question is this, the gearbox is the original 4 speed manual but i was told a 5 speed diesel gearbox or automatic would give it better performance.Any acvice would be much welcomed!
Huss55,
I would have thought that the different revs of the petrol and diesel would have left your conversion undergeared=v slow, ie diesels run at lower rpm.
I understood that the petrol/diesel final drive ratios were different to compensate for this.
But if you are getting 25mpg you are doing very well/hardley over revving ?
Anyway having driven both the 4 and 5 speed diesel 460's I would recommend the 4 speed as being far far "sweeter", to change. The auto will use more fuel, others can advise there.

Marcus,
I agree with that... just to say that the 5 speed manual gearbox fitted to the 463 is so much better than either the 4 or 5 speeders fitted to the 460. I would definitely try to get one of such gearboxes!
How many Zillion miles would be on them Hus ?, are they out of Knackered taxis by any chance ?

PS=edit
Petrol / diesel ?
I "THINK" the different operating revs of the two different engines are sorted by the final drive ratio, ie at the differential,
ie the gearboxs may well be identical be they petrol or diesel ?
I know with commercial vehicles one can specify a low ratio "diff" if towing or other more adrous work, so I'm guessing the "G"'s are the same, it is the most cost effective way.

Well mortinson, it just so happens that there are a few 5 speed gearboxes out in north cyprus going for peanuts! They are however out of w124's,what would you say is better diesel or petrol versions?Cheers!
As Marcus said the gearbox is similar for the petrol and diesel versions. The 717.4 (5-speed gearbox) is precisely the one fitted to early 463 GWagens (with very small modifications) so it would be indeed the perfectt match for your OM603 engine.
A GWagen friend has recently replaced his manual gearbox and he tells his experiences here>

Cheers
Bear in mind though that the bellhousing on the petrol is likely to be different, ie starter motor possibly on opposite side.
