Battery overcharging
Successfully melted 2 batteries in the last few weeks, to the accompaniment (?) of a rotten smell of eggs!! + massive heat.
Guessing that a regulator is at fault?
Any clues as to what\where\cure?

just take it to any of them auto sparks and they will put a meter on it
sounds like voltage regulator is the probs as you said

That will be the hydrogen gas. It gives off this gas as its charging thats why they have a breather tube or hole in the side obviously overcharging and melting the battery will exasserbate the problem.
Thats why you should never install a spare battery inside the vehicle without a breather tube to the outside (for those of you with winches) :roll:
Half right re the smell NicholaS, batteries while under charge give off oxygen and hydrogen,( neither of which has any smell ) which is why venting is so critical -- remember the Hindenberg -- but rotten eggs = hydrogen sulphide, so either the acid has reacted with sommat due to the heat, or the hydrogen gas has, so really I have no idea past that snippet.

1988 300GD has Bosch 0 120 489 901 fitted. This has regulator/brush unit 0 192 052 020 fitted which is now replaced by 1 197 311 030 (£35+Vat in 2006); to fit the snorkel type back with the replacement part requires some grinding on inside. This is what died on me
Motor factors parts listed for this engine are wrong as they do not have the seal brush modification, the snorkel modification, and needs spade connectors not bolt connections. This alternator has a regulator/brush unit 1 197 311 022 which is now replaced by 1 197 311 028 (£25+Vat in 2006). This will crack if you just bolt it in but you could fit it with washers under it in a pinch. The snorkel and seal modification will not work/fit with this fitted.

H2S, is what then ?,I "remembered" it as the rotten eggs smell gas, hydrogen sulphide. So correct us in full then ?

Anyone who doesn't know, remember the fumes are flammable/explosive :shock:
Keep face and body as far away from battery as possible when connecting/disconnecting terminals, especially when you can hear the hissing/boiling going on inside the battery or the sides feel hot. Batteries have exploded in the past, blowing off their top lids, resulting in serious burn injuries, acid in eyes, etc :shock:
Stretched arm, looking away and obviously good venting in the first instance minimises the risk.

as for the danger of batteries, who else here as seen the face of someone who has had a battery explode in their face as they were smoking as they looked over a charging battery, its disgusting.

Thanks for taking the time mgrays with this. Can someone confirm or deny the alternator model no. for a 1992 300GES? Have searched the casing upside and down... no discernible markings. Cheers

if the battery is making noises i would not attempt to work near it.
the face, but both really! if enyone wants help to quit smoking they should look at someone who has had to have their face stapled back to there neck after having a nice little blow hole put in!

£12 regulator cured all!!
Additional question that I'll pose here:
The over voltage not only fried the batteries, it done for the headlight bulbs.
Anyone got a clue how to change a 463 bulb?

take the front headlamp surround of, then take the lamp out and you access the bulb, bit like pulling your eye out of your socket and working behind it.
You have to remove the unit from the vehicle.
Take off the plastic surround- 2 screws below. only loosen them don't remove completely
Then you see the screws to remove the light and housing, pull them out and the light comes out. Bulb on the rear

16.5v on engine rev!! A tad excessive and has now cooked 3 batteries!!
Regulator at back of alternator traced as faulty.
Will update when part number identified. Probably a fraction of the cost of a new battery... :oops:
