Hi all,

Just got my first G and I am looking to restore it to its former glory, it has got a fair bit of rust here and there. Its a bit of a family heirloom, but would love to see it fully restored. The 2.8 certainly drinks fuel.

Am on a tight budget so would like to do most of the work myself, replacing parts etc..

Am based in Canterbury (SE England) and am looking for cheap parts and a good body shop who can sort out the panels in need of attention.

I would appreciate any recommendations/advice you have and cheap places to find parts.

Thanks
Jed

Welcome to the fold!
Would like to suggest some suppliers for your parts & advice but i had better draw the line at steering you towards the G-wizz magazine that the club issues. This publication is distributed 4 times a year & is a joy to recieve.
At the GWOA AGM this year, a new technical representative was voted in so track down RAKESH who is a lovely gent & i am sure he will only be to pleased to assist you with your project.

Hi all,

The restoration to its full glory is coming along nicely.

The list of jobs completed so far is as follows:

replaced spark plugs
replaced HT leads
Replaced Rear offside bumper
resprayed rear nearside bumper
painted rear number plate lighting unit
resprayed front grill
resprayed front sub grill
greased prop shafts
new number plates
resprayed air filter box and air transfer conduit
hammered rear number plate holder straight/flat and re-sprayed.

still working on:

respray front bumper
replace leaking wiper spindles.
repair worn drivers seat
flush and clean radiator
change oil in diffs and transfer case
sort stuck front diff lock.
rust holes in wheel arches.

Its all going nicely.. :)
and I am doing all this out of a car park as I still have nowhere better to park it.. :)

Welcome Jed.
For parts try euro car parts or http://www.g-classcentre.co.uk/, that’s Merv’s place.
For panels try http://www.autoblechteile.de/A-Webseiten/Englisch/E-Startseite.htm.
OK for wheel arch repair panels but don’t bother with rear ¼ panels. Go for genuine Merc ones. About £55 each. Oh and if you do want a rear passenger side wheel arch repair panel I have one.

in addition to my swb daily runner, I have just this morning taken delivery of Scouse G's lwb which I am going to use as a project vehicle over the next year or so.

I have named him "Rusty", roll on saturday when I can get my hands dirty!
