Hi

Which transmisions are better (automatic or manual)?
Whats your opinion about w460 automatic (280GE)?
I have found G class- Montana execution.
Do you know something about it?

Thanks

Re: Opinion for automatic transmision

Either are good. I have a 280 manual and a 500 auto. I think, but may be wrong, that 280 automatics are quite rare, in the UK at least.

I have been to Sofia on a number of occasions, great city and a lot of Gs.

If you want advice on Gs you have come to the right place.

Thanks for the kind words

I think that they are quite rare in all Europe .
Why Mercedes produced w460 with autimatic transmision - is this made to order?
I think so because old Gs are made for Mountains(offroad) not for the highway like the w462 and w463, or maybe the owner have classic taste ?
Sofia is full with a lot of Gs - they are the latest fashion now

Re: Opinion for automatic transmision

Hi Venkov,

MB automatics are generally far superior to manuals: firstly, they tend to be more solid and durable, secondly, the manuals tend to have a truck-like feel to them (with the notable exception of the gearbox fitted to early 463s), thirdly, the automatics are so much better for off-roading (with the only exception of extreme down-hill driving, where engine retention in the manual is much better). I myself drive a manual but I would certainly prefer an automatic.

At least in the UK, a majority of 280 GEs were Automatics. The Automatic gearbox was a cost option in all markets for all 460 G-Wagens except the 240 and 250 GDs, which cost some DM 2,907 (some € 1,500) in 1989 in Germany.

As regard to the Montana badging, I believe that this is a limited edition., like the "Erg", "Targui", "Lomé" and "Dakar" limited editions for the French market of the late eighties. Is the Montana a limited edition of a short batch of 280 GEs SWB Autos for the Swiss market? I don't know.... but that truck does certainly look good.

Cheers
