Difflocks not engaging.
Question number 2 :D
According to the handbook that came with my G the difflocks are engaged by lifting the 'knob' upwards. However, they don't move at all.
Where should I start looking for the problem? Just clean the mechanism underneath and spray with penetrating oil or is it indicative of a deeper problem than that?
They could be seized as they are the master cylinders connected to the push pull levers. Check the fluid in the container under the hood. Get under the truck and see what you can find. The levers are directly connected to the master cylinders if they don’t move it could be because of stuck master cylinders or slaves on the axels. One of mine has always been stiff but it works – maybe you need to use more force to get it to free up. They are just straightforward hydraulic cylinders and new seals are available if needed. When you get them to move you have to drive a few feet to get them to lock and unlock. Don’t try it on hard pavement as the drive train will wind up and ultimately destroy the drive gear – 4x4 and difflocks are only for loose off road stuff. A gravel drive is good for testing them and they do need exercising at regular intervals to prevent seizing.
As Ernest said have a look at the linkage wack on some WD40 check the resoirvoir is full and give them a good pull thay may never of been used ,
do this on a track that is very gravaly to give the diffs chance to spin off the lockers lights will only go on when the diff locks .
Twodogs
Theres are rubber hoses to the lockers underneath. I had to replace them on mine (E plate) as they leaked. Something to check.
Thanks for the ideas chaps.
I have looked under the bonnet and the difflock resivour is full of fluid, so I guess it's just sticky linkage.
Will take a further look when I get the chance.
I'll be back :D
