I don't know of any case where this has been done and I suspect the reason is economic: the differences in price between hard- and a soft tops are marginal so the best course of action is to sell your hardtop and buy a convertible. Yes, I know that RHD-convertibles are very rare and mostly limited to a single engine option -300 GD for 460s and G500 for 463s- but in the case of the former another option is to buy an used bare bodywork and rebuild your hardtop SWB around it. The finished product would be so much better

I agree that a 'proper' one would be best but, I fancy a bit of a project and I would prefer to fabricate something myself for fun use in the summer....

I am sure I have seen some pictures of a diy black lifted G that had had the top chopped off??

Anybody seen it?? got a URL?

I think that you are talking about GZilla in the states.

See http://www.clubgwagen.com/extreme/index.htm

I hope that this helps. My personal recommendaton is to leave it alone, but each to his own. Good luck with your project.

Thanks ScouseG,

I would be interested in any photographs you have while constructing your soft top. Particularly interested in where you cut the body and any problems you encountered.

Please email pictures to my home email address (in profile).
