Rear Quaters
I am seriously thinking of replacing the rear quarters on my G with MB replacements.
As I see it there are four joints:
top, this looks like it can be plug welded from inside;
bottom, external, plug weld or possibly just mig weld;
inside (next to door), possibly plug welded, but the newer Gs just have a welded seam, which looks more straight forward; and
outside, this looks a pig. It joins to the side panel internally and I can’t see how to get to it easily. I am also concerned about the condition of the side panel mating flange, you need something to weld to.
Does anyone have any tips or advice on doing this? I will do the strip down and prep myself but will get a coded welder in to do the rest with a mig welder.
I have had quotes to do the work at a body shop but I fear that once they have it apart the price will increase…
I still plan to get the spray work done professionally.
Any advice would be gratefully received.
Also, someone other than Greeny posted some pics of this being done, I can't find them now. Are they still around?
So you dont want my pictures then!!
I have lots of stage by stage and I can give you some detail over the phone or email should you require it

I used the equiv. of tiger seal panel adhesive/sealer + mig welder. Worked a treat and a better job than attemting to weld in certain areas.

Do you want me to send some photos to your email as long as you have ADSL. dial-up will be no good or just post them on the web?
It is quite complicated to write out but willif you want me to post it :shock:
I've just had a quote for rear quarter panels for my 280GE SWB from Merc for £323 + VAT each! This is a bit different from the £50 each quoted by someone - does anyone know where to source them at a more reasonable price?! :?:
how soon do you need em ? think might have some VGC ones on a scrapper!!
I brought the rear quater panels from mercedes about six months back cost £50 a side sounds to me you have been quoted for the inners and the rear wings 8)
Twodogs
Not in a great hurry - though would like to get bodywork done before weather breaks. I'm surprised that there are any good ones on a scrapper - thought they all rotted here? Don't suppose your scrapper has anything else that might fit my 280 SWB - will have to do something about wheel arches too... Xtn
Thank you two dogs - do you still have contact details for your mercedes supplier - don't suppose you still have part number? See you have had to work on wheel arches too, so will I, is this why I might need rear wings? What are inners? Xtn
its a lwb with a seized engine- spare 300gd gpoing and being turned into a 'green laner' so most of rear bodywork is comng off, will be purely funcction not form!! :D
Elvis - would quarters from your scrapped lwb fit my swb? Do you have a set of wheel arch extensions? Xtn
I recently purchased a pair from MB via buckalec in ireland paid £100 ish perfect fit
The problem seems to be when you tell MB you want rear quarters they quote you for the panels on the rear side of the vehicle over the rear wheel arch
Looks to me that they are the sort of guys who would count their balls twice and arrive at a different result each time... we're in their hands and we're definitely in trouble!
succinctly put :shock: :lol:
Thanks Guys - Buckalec from Belfast and Alan Gibson from Ayrshire both confirm that MB should be able and willing to provide just the rear quarter panel repair sections for around £50 each - seems to depend on who runs the spares dept
Cant remember whether i sent you photos if i did nt here are a few to be going with http://www.thegreenies.info/id19.htm
I have plenty more should you need them I was totally surprised by the state of the inner nearside quarter should yours be the same you are welcome to call me and i will talk you through what i did or better still I can call you as I have very cheap to UK calls yours might not be so cheap to France :roll:
No not MB dan I fabricated it all round my door, it broke off at the bottom too it took some time but if you can bend steel and mig weld its just time, also instead of captive nuts to hold the hinge I fabricated a 10mm steel bar with taps similar to the arrangement on the other doors to give slightly more adjustment, loads more solid than the original. I used 2mm stell for this part but 1.5 for the rest. it does nt have to ook beautiful as it all covered by the quarter and if you are tigersealing them on like a few of us have done you can adjust by over filling the adhesive.
My rear cill had gone too what is yours like
More pics would be great. Was it a pig to do though?
