Re: Winch Bumpers and Portal axles

That sounds a tad "anti competitive" or something similar in EU speak, surely a manufacturer cannot refuse to sell to a genunine purchaser?

Re: Winch Bumpers and Portal axles

Think goalposts Dan, ie the axle is kept up mostly out of harms way, whilst at the hubs the drive is stepped down ( both in terms of revolutions and height ) with gears, lets the half shafts rotate faster than the wheels therefore reducing the torque, therefore the half shafts can be thinner, or last longer - depending on priorities.

Re: Winch Bumpers and Portal axles

there is a guy in the midlands who could, his name is lee Bond, but dont do it. buy a 460 and use 404 mog axles and tow it around with your 400.

Dirtydiesel,
Very tidy looking truck, congrats on the fruits of your endevours.
But -- how does it rate for pedestrian friendleness ?
And are there a set of swing-out steps for access ?

Re: Winch Bumpers and Portal axles

hey dirty, any chance of some more piccys of the rear and the way the winch on the front is tucked away, are you staying with the steel wheels or going for a wider tyre later.

Re: Winch Bumpers and Portal axles

It's not that tippy :D

It has a 300tdi in it but not for long though!

As for the steels they stay on for playing in this country, i'll have to have some custom rims made for the 15" wide boggers i'll need in russia.

More photo's can be found on my build thread on lr4x4

The back wheel fell into a bit of a hole, then i kept my foot down basically driving it onto it's roof :D

The only damage done was a small dent and scratch in the door where the door mirror folded into it.

The 300 is man enough, i'm just after something to really boil the bogs up.

I ma be tepted to put a 5 litre merc in it yet, at least it'd interest more of the merc bigots then!

Anyone know for one?

Re: Winch Bumpers and Portal axles

Sorry to bump an old thread but I want to have a go at Unimog axles into a G. I've seen mog axles on eBay and the diff on the front axle seems to be in the middle of the Axle.

Can anyone tell me how this mod is done front and rear .... I'm intrigued

Re: Winch Bumpers and Portal axles

I think the standard mod is to shorten one side of the axle and relevant drive shaft to offset the diff so that it will then line up with the G transfer case.

I am not certain but I think it may be necessary to flip the axle as well to get the correct rotational direction for the diff so the hubs turn in the right direction !

If you have to make the above mods there would be a fair bit of work involved to cut and re-weld the axle and cut and re-spline the drive shaft. If the axle  does have to be flipped then there would be a bit of fabrication work to relocate all the suspension mounting points etc.

You would be quite restricted by the Mogs hub gearing and would probably be looking at around 50mph max speed, which is just as well because you would also have the Mogs drum brakes.

I looked at doing this to my G several years ago and decided that fitting a set of bolt on portal hubs would be a much easier route. There are several companies that offer these now and many of them come with a disc brake option.

Off course the easiest route if you want portal axles is to buy a Pinzgauer (like me).smiley
