Finaly questions are being asked about the suitability of the Landrover in the Afghan and Iraq conflicts.
I wonder what will replace them, if youve got a Daimler Ferret it could suddenly become valuble.

Belting little armoured scout car 4 wd Rolls Royce engine 4Lt plus petrol engine. 2 man crew, browning machine gun, and used extensively to patrol trouble spots all over the world with great success. The drivers position up front was on top of the front axle drive shafts which ran internally each side of your seat, hot and noisey but great fun, the F1 of armoured cars, made in Coventry and well respected by all who used it.
I have emailed you both details direct, thanks for your interest.

Bill isn't tat first one a ferret from 2nd WW? I'm sure we used those as targets in the late eighties for SA 90mm canon mounted on 6x6 armoured car, the Ratel.

Re: Finaly

I rather suspect that I am the only inhabitant of planet earth who owns both a G-Wagen (two actually) and a Daimler Ferret. The Ferret is a pig o drive since not only is its steering wheel upside down, but the steering is ludicrously heavy. But it is fun nonetheless. I also, by the way, have am Abbot self-propelled gun. With its automatic transmission its a lot of fun to drive...

Re: Finaly

The ferret must have been an amazing piece of kit in its day. We towed one out one day to blow up when the driver in the ferret managed to start it, probably after a long running start. That car stood outside in the dessert sun for more than 30 years, and ran on that old petrol.

Am I giving my age away?,
I recall "commanding" a ferret during Exercise Lionheart, ( with the TA I hasten to add ) and since the intercom did not work I had the ears damm near kicked off the driver whilst attempting to communicate with foot signals, this whilst driving on the wrong side of the public road in Denmark.
Happy days,
Marcus

Re: Finaly

Sad to say that if it isn't a "state of the art MBT",and it has wheels on,there aint much that can stop "modern" RPG type weapons! the types of armoured "B" vehicles used by the Brits, were designed for use in an urban environment, where there were restricted fire corridors,so you knew where the most likely firing points were, when your out in the middle of nowhere, with numerous options for firing points,i'ts open season on anything that moves.

These "kiddies" aren't stupid, remember before they got Stinger, they perfected the technique of getting up above MIL 24s,and shooting down through the rotors,to bring them down, pretty neat trick.

This conflict requires a lot more thought, than this government is prepared to give, and no matter what they come up with you can bet someone else's life, that they will not spend more than is neccesary to ease their political minds.

You're right about,it having to be a British company, look how much the Apache cost just because they wanted to save jobs at Westland!

PS. Sorry about the rant, but as any ex serviceman will tell you, socialist governments don't give a rats about the Armed Forces, period.

It is unlikley to change, we have no polaticians now who have served in the Armed Forces or fought in a war, They are mostly lawyers. with the exception of one who served on a cross channel ferry, that is served gin and tonics.

Off topic - but how do you get about a MIL 24 except in another helicopter or airplane? I would guess mountains but then you'repretty limited.

Would the trick not work shooting up through the rotors?

Afghanistan is notoriously mountainous. A falling projectile has a greater range.

Re: Finaly

You create a "come on" situation,up in the high passes(during the summer",the Hind turns up and, because of the thin air(elevation and heat),it has to fly below the the sides of the passes, forget about the heat shields on the exhausts, you just shoot down through the rotor arc with anything heavy, aiming for the rotor gearbox. Double whammy, rotor and gearbox in one go,big browny/greeny thing with no fan falls out of sky end of story.

There is one recorded incident, where they threw a Russian tow rope, down into the rotors of a Mil 24,and brought it down, simple ideas are the best, especially when the other side provides the wherewithall.

Ah right - I was thinking about using weapons to bring it down - not simple objects! That is clever.

Re: Finaly

Back to the main thread............
The beauty of democracy is that everybody is perfectly entitled to have their say, even when their views are based on naivety, ignorance and/or stupidity. Unfortunately, the subject matter is extremely sensitive, both militarily and politically, so anybody who might actually know what is going on in this field, can't, or at least shouldn't, chime in with the current thinking in public.
There clearly are one or two members here who can put two and two together, so, bearing in mind this forum is read all over the world, I suggest the subject matter be closed before somebody inadvertently comes out with a snippet of information that could compromise our troops.

I am sorry if you deem this to be rude or melodramatic, but I figure enough damage has already been done with the adverse press coverage of the snatch LR's apparent failings. Various suggested alternatives can only be second-guessing the MoD and is probably not helpful. :?

Re: Finaly

As you say, everyone's thoughts on the current situation are entirely subjective, sadly everything that has been discussed on this forum regarding the shortcomings of said vehicle, are in the public domain, and have been for a lot longer than the current British deployment,in Afghanistan.

As for second guessing the MOD,that would suggest that there are people in Defence Procurement, who actually know what it is like to be deployed in to a combat zone (sorry I meant peace keeping role),and realise what it is like to rely on rubbish equipment!

If members of this forum really want to know how good the MOD and,Def Proc are at protecting our servicemen, and spending your taxes, try "Lions Donkeys and Dinosaurs" by a chap called Lewis Page,it will open your eyes, the Lion in question is the serviceman, you'll have to read the book to find out about the other two!
