I have nearly finished the rear quarters now and was just poking around uner the body when... I came across round and slotted body bungs under the sill area what are/were these for? they seemed to have caused more rust around them and in one place at the front end the sill has rotted through under the rubber strip because of water getting stuck inside i think, are they just for waxoyling when the vehicle was new what if i take them out to allow any water that gets in, to get out 8)
It Certainly seems that the underseal has exasserbated some of the rust problems but I must say for a 20 yr old nearly she is doing really well 90% of the rust is pretty superficial the 10% was the rear quarters especially the passenger side I have had to completely rebuild the door hanging pillar. I have updated it though so I can easily access and adjust the bottom hinge from under the wheel arch and instead of captive nuts I have done a similar thing to the 'lock keeps' by fitting a 10mm thick threaded bar fitted into a cage to make the bottom hinge a little more adjustable.
Pics to follow 8)

Re: body plugs

as much as anything these bungs are to block the holes that have to be left so the body can be dipped during production, so that excess wax etc can get back out.

Did you replace the rear quaters? If so how easy was it to do? I need to do mine and also the bit where the door attaches as I fear that hte bottom part is rusted. Perhaps strengthing would by suficent though.

Re: body plugs

Define the word easy  the right hand side was more easy as it was less rotten the LH side has taken me 30hrs once I got the quarter off the damage was 10 times what I had expected, I had to completely rebuild the bottom half of the hanging post. If you want to pm me your email address I l send you some pics I have taken loads. I might not respond until after the weekend as I am off to the Lemans 24 hrs race.

Right... :D

This is the webpage where you will find a few photos I thought it better than putting them directly on here.

One of the reasons the LHside was so bad was because of the side air vent pipe coming loose at some time in its past I am going to glue the new ones in place
The RHside was not too bad, finding a drilling the spotwelds helped to remove without too much damage
The LHside was a different kettle of bird in the bush
As the rust took a hold the heavy door made it worse by moving around and eventually breaking away.
for the structural part I used 2.5mm steel bending to strengthen
I have painted the inside with Green smoothrite for protection as I am going to put the quarters on with 'Tigerseal' This way it will seal the joints all round and i wont have to overweld the seams just to gring then out again to keep the seam lines. I am then going to waxoyle everything :D
When the LHside is finished I am going to put in a blanking panel under the wheel arch to stop water and mud kicking up in the future. At least that way I can check it myself and also get to the bottom hinge for adjustment if necessary.
Hope that helps some, any questions please feel free

That is brilliant and very much appreciated! I need to tackle this myself very soon so this really helps.

Re: body plugs

Some gruesome pic’s of my G’s rear end and one after I replaced the rear panel. Used the equivalent to tiger seal on some of the seams, brilliant stuff :D
