Help!
My G is dripping oil into the drivers footwell from below the dash - it seems to get worse at higher speeds.
After looking under the beastie, I think it may be transfer case oil travelling up the speedo cable. Has anyone else encountered this before, and if so, is there a seal or similar that I can replace at the transfer case end of the cable?

On another issue - The old girl is pulling almost 4000rpm at 100kph - for a diesel this seems very high to me, is it normal or should I check the Auto tranny?
Cheers,
Red.

The oil leak is most definitely coming past the seal on the speedo intake off the transfer case. I don't have access to my EPC right now but your ever friendly local Mercedes agent must be able to source it for you if you give him the VIN of your truck.

As for the turning speed of the engine at a given speed, it entirely depends on your gearbox and differential ratios and the size of your wheels (given that all 460s were fitted with the same transfer box). I take that your G has an automatic transmission W4A018
720.108 (1:1 ratio in 4th) and the 44:9 ratio diffs which I believe were standard to all Australian imports of the time.

Now given the transfer box ratio of 1.05:1 and what appear to me as puny 235/70R15 tyres fitted to your G-Wagen, the engine turning speed for a 100 Km/h is some 3,951 rpm which look as pretty close to the 4,000 rpm you state.

Solution? fit 31x10.5R15 tyres and keeping the rest your engine spped will be some 3,562 rpm at 100 Km/h.

What about the oil pressure guage? If it's mechanical it could be a leaking connection.

Mortinson,
thanks for the help (and the excuse to buy some big wheels :D )

Roly,
it's definitely transfer case oil not engine oil, so I'll try that new seal.
I'm one of two G owners located in a little coastal town called Yeppoon, at the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland.

Cheers and much thanks,
Red.
