Interior restoration project, ideas?
Plan on redoing the interior on my 85 4dr 280gel. Like to reupholster seats and door panel in leather and recarpet the floor. Like to get ideas from any other forum members on styles and suggestions.
Also please let me know if you find a good upholsterer that could refurbish front leather seat trims, etc at a reasonable price. Has anyone tried replacing the "cloth" roof lining with vinyl or leather (much easier to upkeep)?
Once the body is finished on mine the interior is next I am going to remodel slightly and am looking into trimming all in leather including rooflining but not sure whether it will go around all the angles easily enough. I have trimmed upholstory before, I did my old S'Type Jag and it wins concours shows but it isnt easy for novice like me so I am not going to do Gerties seats (I dont think)
i know some good trimmers in london but not brazil  Look at about £1500+ for quality trimming and hides DO NOT ACCEPT CHEAP SPLIT HIDES they dont last. One of my 'fingers in different pies' businesses was a leather restoration service so trust me I know what rubbish is out there. Why do you think DFS and such like can sell a sofa for £300 when one good hide can cost you that? :?
Good luck- I just sold a very nice big old car, some models of which had the lining in vinyl, others in leather- actually the roof lining held out much better in vinyl (good quality) rather than leather. Unless the leather is good quality, it can sag, stretch and fade where the sun hits it- unlike vinyl, which also benefits from no maintenance other than an occasional wash. Of course, this only applies to roof-linings (seats are a complete other story!)
Actually a good quality vinyl like the jag ambla or mercs leatherette will outlast hide by years but malheuresment we all love leather with its smell and feel
Absolutely- perhaps (for the roof lining at least) it would be worthwhile having a look at the alcantara fake suede that Merc are currently using on their ML class- this has a good reputation for maintenance, altough next time round I think that I will use a good vinyl. Have you thought of doing the doors in leather- I once did a Fiat 600D in the early 80s which came out wonderfully, and also wore very well!
I am actually going to change the interior subtely but as i am doing the body at the moment I havent got to thinking about that yet, I will be making my own panels though so the doors will change very slightly in look, more in the 463 style i suspect with burr veneer caps. the dash is going to look more modern too with more storage
I know its not keeping the G original but its what I want to do and i will do it tastefully unlike some i have seen. 8)
Woolies in peterborough is a great trim supplier
Do they supply leather as well?
Actually also planning on getting a 463 for over here, which will probably need some upgrading-although hopefully nothing as much as I notice that you have been through recently!
Anyway, it is very difficult to do things in Central London without the correct facilities and space.
