Hi there,

Does anyone have a similar experience with the 300GE/G300 i-6? At roundabouts the engine oil light comes on. I thought it must be low on oil, but I just replaced the oil and filter, and put in at least 6L (capacity max is 6.5), so do I just keep pouring in? The dipstick shows the level at just above minimum.

OR is this indicating a fault somewhere else? Or maybe I should just take roundabouts a bit slower...

Unless I am terribly wrong you need to fill until the dipstick shows the level at just under maximum with the engine off and after it has had enough time for settling in.

Mind you one think that MB has allowed for reasonable cornering forces when deciding where to set the "minimum" level on the dipstick, and even more so when one considers the various permissable angles for a "G" off road.Presumably you have looked for loose wires/ chafed wires etc, that may be moving on cornering, if all else fails you could fit an oil pressure gauge for reassurance.I'm in the dark otherwise.
cheers ,

Sorry I've just learnt something new today :? (and hence feel very sheepish). There is no oil light in the G, that was the coolant light. The coolant was low.

Coolant topped up, light stopped coming on in roundabouts

Oil, however, remained below minimum, so I put in the rest of the bottle (less than a litre) and it came up to just above max. Despite the severe warning text on the oil filler cover, I am hoping this will not cause any damage, as I am sure it will soon go down (and I need to track down that leak, nothing major, but that's another story). I'll keep you posted, my hands are itching to rebuild the head on the I-6, but I need to consult an engine shop first, as nothing is really wrong with it, besides the slight oil leak. I daresay the transmission shifts better than the one we had in Dubai at 145,000kms!

over filling creates pressure and blows seals u dont need to go to max between is fine.

then i guess better to find a friendly garage to suck out 0.5l or so; can't be bothered to go thru the oily mess again just for that!

Furthermore, today saw the coolant changed, was more work than expected, what with removing the front underbody protection and grill (and fog light just for good measure). Old coolant looked clean enough, but I can understand why people \"forget\" to change the coolant because it is a pain to get to. The manual advises the first step as \"open water heat exchanger\" or something like that. No clue what that is!\r\nSome pics from the recent work, to keep all entertained.\r\nAnother oddity, the manual says it can take 7.8L in the cooling system, I barely put in 4L and it indicated full. A minute of running the engine only reduced the level slightly, and when I drained it hardly 5L came out. Maybe Merc are over-estimating or putting the numbers for an engine with all the options (a/c, ex.heater).

Re: Oil light on at roundabouts

With regards to the "heat exchanger" mentioned above, I think DUTCH from the States answered that in a recent post on pointedthree.com:

Quote:
The middle lever in the heating controls will open or close a valve in the hot water line to the heater. This used to be located under the hood on the right side of the engine, but may have been moved to a position under the dash. In either case, when that valve is open, hot water from the engine cooling system flows into the heater core to heat the inside of the truck. When it's closed, no hot water flows; and your air through the system will be similar to the outside air.
