Re: Tappets

Setting the tappets on a 617 engine is relitively easy if you have the tappet spanners (14mm). They are best set from cold with 10 mm on inlet and 30mm on exhaust. With the cover removed, set the clearances on the ones where the cam lobes are uppermost. ( 1 exhaust and 1 inlet] The clearances are usually too tight and the adjusting nuts on the valves need to be turned down to achieve the correct setting. Then turn the engine (quick flick of the key or socket on the crank bolt) till the next pair of cam lobes are uppermost and set the corresponding tappets. Repeat this procedure till all tappets have been set. Be sure to check which ones are inlet and which ones are exhaust by looking at the manifolds.

Re: Tappets

Those are microns .. ie thousand's of mm.

Two 14mm open ended spanners can adjust them

Getting cover off is a bit of an art as you have to angle it over to on top of injectors.

Stick in 5th gear and push car backwards slowly (if not auto.. I know you should go forwards but it works!)

Look at the manifolds to work out which one is inlet or exhaust ..rust = exhaust

Lobes should actually be slightly off vertical if you look at the point of the finger resting on the lobe but it is does not matter as the cams are so mild that the "off" period is rather large.
