Hi I just bought a 1988 300GD 9 seater about a month with engine oil leaks. I new the risk of buying it in this state and found out only 1 of the 5 cylinders was working and it obviously lacked compression. I took it to check out its situation and the mecanics say I need a new engine. Can somebody advise if I should buy the same type engine (300GD) or install a diferent one? I would really apreciate your help.

Ricardo,

There is no point in posting the same message in three different sections. I would appreciate if you would refrain from doing it. Now going back to your question, you could either stick to the current one (OM 617), install the turbo-version from a 300TDT (OM617A) or even try a OM602 or OM603 conversion. It depends on what you want and what is your budget.

Re: which engine to buy?

Hi,

My current engine is the one with aprox. 80hp . When you say stick to the same one, would the engine now be the new 133hp or does the 80hp engine still exist?
I would be interested in the 133hp engine. Whats the technical name of the engine so that I can ask for a price quote in Spain, alicante. (I am in Portugal). ?

Is this an engine you would recomend because I read in the forum that it "wears out very early"

Thankyou very much for all the help.

Re: which engine to buy?

I don't know what engine are you referring to.

There was never an egine with 133 HP fitted to a Gwagen (from factory that is).

The options are:

1) Fit the OEM engine: OM617 with 88 hp (not 80)

2) Fit a similar engine but designed with turbo: OM617A, with 125 hp, as fitted to the W123 300 TD Turbodiesel. Very difficult to find used in good condition and even more factory reconditioned.

3) Fit the more modern OM602 (84 to 95 hp), OM602 29 (95 hp) or OM 603 (113 hp) as fitted to the W461 and W463 Gs (no turbo or electronic injection, hence the mechanical simplicity and high reliability). Loads of used engines out there from the W201, W124 Mercedes sedans, but these require some modifications like oil pans and engine mounts and the like and the practical need to fit the appropiate gearbox.

4) Fit something exotic like the OM606 (136 hp) or OM603 A 30 (143 hp) (same comments as 3).

Because in the saloon versions of such engines the sump tends to interfere with the front diff when fitted to a G
