On my 463 the Steering Box is just starting to weep PAS oil around the drop arm. I beleive this is common after certain mileage.Unfortunately I have lost my copy of G WHizz, with neccesary pictures.
Which seals do I need to order, I assume I have to take the Box off, is that straight forward?Anything to be wary off?
Many Thanks

Re: Steering Box Leaks

the box needs to come off, and to get it off you need to take off air con pump. a right pain in the ass. a recon box is about £200, you can try and re-seal your self but make sure shafts are not pitted.

Showed it to a Mechanic mate. Do you think it is impossible to replace the bottom seal in situ?
He thinks it is possible?Or his this a no go!
Do you need a really strong puller to get drop arm off?Any advice here.

Re: Steering Box Leaks

I changed the bottom seal on my box last year. The job was done with the box in place. Truthfully I paid my favourite garage to do the job. The seal is not much . The problem was removing the arm from the shaft. The mech. took 3 days to release it. He used a hydraulic puller type of thing and put it under pressure, but it would not move. So each day he applied a little heat, oil and applied more pressure on the pump. Also light tapping with a large hammer. Eventually he split it and the arm came off with a bang, but no damage to threads nor splines.
Easy to change the seal then, and dry afterwards.
Give yourself some time and it will be OK, rush it and you will break something expensive.

Thanks Roly.
Mech this end is worried about the Arm being on very tight, hence I am looking into buying a good puller!Unfortunately no access to a hydraulic one.Glad it can be done in situ!
