Hope you can help !

Have a '91 300GE and yesterday upon startup the engine turned over and then died. Starter engaged - battery etc all fine - plenty of petrol in the tank. BUT fuel was not getting through !

Tested fuel pump and that works - with direct wire - but power does not seem to be getting to the pump - wanted advice as to what to rule out next/first etc. Have checked fuses and relays all seem to click/work when ignition is switched to on - but not cranked.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

Cheers

I had a problem with my 280 cutting out and it turned out to be the fuel pump relay.

Re: Fuel / Electric - start problem

My problem was intermittent. It went to MB who couldn't find it. I took it to a Bosch service centre who checked the whole system and said everything was ok. I think they checked the relay but it was working at the time, not sure though. They said that it could not be anything else as they had checked it all but they could not say the relay was the problem for definite. Anyway they changed it and I have had no more problems four years on.

I know £90 is a lot of dosh but unless you can find someone who can test it I would just get it. At least it eliminates the relay as a potential problem.

I understand that you should change it when you change the fuel pump. My G had a new fuel pump just before I bought it, but no relay!

Tell us how you get on.

Re: Fuel / Electric - start problem - RESOLVED

Just to update you that I tracked it down to the fuel pump relay.

Orig p/n 0035450005 was replaced by superceeded p/n 0035452405.

Got this through German and Swedish - £59+vat.

Cheers

Could you please say where you got this from, is it mentioned in the manual or is it advice by a mechanic? I'll try to ask MB also...

I had the same problem, I managed to open up the relay, inspect it for breaks in the circuit and solder it up! Car works a treat now !

Re: Fuel / Electric - start problem

I have a different problem The car starts and runs very rich but occasionally it just stops. I am sure it electrical as I had no spark at the plug. I hot wired the coil and its still intermittent. I will change the ciol but when I hot wire I hear a relay clicking from I suspect under the dash Might my problem lie there Any advice welcome as I am in the land of the blind One other point is it a 12volt output coil or a 6 volt one with a resistor any help or advice most welcome Gary

Re: Fuel / Electric - start problem

Have you checked your distributor cap and rotor arm? On 463's with the 3.0 lts engine these usually burn out at about 70,000 miles. A burning out dizzy usually gives the fault you are experiencing. Call back if not.

The other point I, read above in the forum, some one suggested that the relay should be changed when changing the fuel pump, Not so, if there is no problem with it. One could argue that if the fuel pump has being drawing a heavy current the relay could have internally melted, but when that happens, is when you change the relay, when there is a fault present but not as a matter of course.

Re: Fuel / Electric - start problem

Thanks for the valuable input Pistonhead! Always appreciated.
I have an intermittent starting problem too that only shows up rarely, have inspected the relay and all the welds appear solid, so I will wait to see if/when it packs up to replace.
Also remember the service book advises to change the fuel filter every 2nd maintenance service, or every 24,000miles/2yrs.
