Diesels
Can someone give me a brief run down of all the diesel engines up to the CDi units.
Which were the best, which were turbo'd, their production years and more importantly which ones to give a miss !
I am looking for a SWB diesel around the mid to late nineties preferably, so a guide to which one I should be looking for would be appreciated.
Thanks
The g4rce site has the info you want, for late 90's models check out both the 461 & 463 ranges.

Apart from that, if you want your G to be RHD you have just two options: the 1991 to 1994 naturally aspirated OM603-powered 300 GD or the very very rare 1998 to 2001 G290GTD.
Cheers
The 290 turbos are very nice as well. In fact if you do a lot of off roading, it may be a better option.
If you buy in Europe, you more then likely will have to replace the speedo ( £470 + VAT) & headlights before registering in the UK, and then you'll be clobbered with the new band "G" £215 road tax.
just to cheer some of you people up about the 215 road tax, consider this.
If you lived in Ireland , road tax on a 3 liter engine would be approx 1200 euros.
Better yet if you imported a car from another european country you would have to pay 30 percent of the value of the car to the revenue. This used to be called Excise Duty, but when the barriers to free trade in the EU came down in 1993, (I think), the name of this tax changed overnight to Vehicle Registration Tax. This is an example of what in Ireland is called "cute hoorism".

:( your are spot on
and not a penny of it spent back on the roads again
 Berties not part of that "cute hoorism". brigade, lol
i have a 1982 300gds project , i think a wicklow reg (22MNI) is that right :?
needing quite a bit of work ,very straight body , needs complete interior
and back door isnt good and i have a 5 speed box out and stripped awaiting bearings for it ,i dont know if i should sell it the way it is or spend on it as it is already on the irish plates and is commerical class in the book ? when it was imported in from mercedes in 1982 it was brought in as a commerical with only front seats in it
and going buy the chassis number checker on that russian mercedes site its states that it only had front seats (i think)
but the good thing is that is always has had the commerical (cheap) tax
:D
I have a scrapper, swb, seats are rough and would need recovering but they are all there, front and back, its a long way to come though.
thanks , were abouts are you
pretty stupid of me not to say
co.clare, very close to Limerick city
If you do fit a 617a make sure you swap the flywheel for a 617 and incude the clutch

There is also the 290 GD in RHD. I have one. Its not the fastest thing in the world, tops out at about 80-85mph, but its fabulous off road and does about 27mpg without the horse box and down to about 20 mpg with it (plus two 16hh eventers). Its ace.
Mine was originally made for a timber company in Malaysia, so it has air con and leather. Its also white, which isn't ideal.

Congrats, you must have the only 290GD RHD in the UK.
Leather? Surely it must be MB-tex?
White 290GD RHD, is it a LWB? If so, i may have seen it parked up in Hampstead about a month ago. :D
Jesus,
I will risk correcting you there,
Nik @ Wheelhouse has a 1999 RHD LWB 290 GD car type for sale, it came out of NI  recently.
Cheers,
Marcus

It's now just a plugged turbo... that engine is sooo much different
Pictures please ...we do not get to see thoses often....
Whoa there,
My knickers are getting proper twisted,
Who's got a plugged turbo,
What is a plugged turbo,
Why would one plug a turbo,
Etc, etc
and what or whose engine is sooo different
I understand that the early 290's were non turbo,
then got turbocharged from some date onwards
:? :?

OK Marcus.
What I meant is that I don't know of any other 290GD in RHD in the UK.
There are a few 290GD Turbodiesels in RHD but still no more that I would say 25 in the country.
As regards to the differences between a OM602D29 and a OM602DE29LA I meant that they were much more than just fitting a turbo and a intercooler.

The latter for example gained direct injection, electronic pump control, fly by wire throttle, etc, etc. Really the only resemblance is the geometry of the block - the rest all different.
Um late 90’s MB with
direct injection, electronic pump control, fly by wire throttle, etc, etc.

Sad but true, and I suppose MB were not the only one's to lose thier way around then
Jackson's, the military dealers, had 5 99 circa 290GD (non turbo) RHD for sale a little over 2 years ago, I saw one for sale after that in Truck trader at a commercial MB dealer, all came with 2 spare wheels. I then saw one for sale on Ebay in the cambridge area. After that they dissapeared, there is more than one out there, and There was a member, a farmer who purchased one from europe.
I'm sorry to take so long to answer this! I bought it via this website about two years ago, from the For Sale section.
My one is a white RHD G290 LWB. Manufactured in Germany 1996. Imported to England 1998. 461 Chassis. Its a non-turbo engine, with the five-speed transmission, two-speed transfer box and separate manual diff locks. It has all sorts of dust shrouds to protect the alternator and so on, plus the air filter is different to normal ones. Its on 16" steel wheels, and carries the spare on the rear door. I have two other spares, which came with it. Its got what I assume is an aftermarket roo bar on the front with two large spots (which I have just disconnected). I also have the original roof rack bars.
Inside, its got leather (not MB-Tex), air con and CD changer, but otherwise is rubber matted (which is just what I wanted). I also have the rear seats, but they aren't fitted at the moment. I have fitted an animal grille behind the rear seats, which I had made by Barjo Engineering. Bizarrely, it also has side steps.
I have (hopefully) attached a picture of it, taken on the drive of the chap I bought it from at the time. If anyone would like pics of any specific bits, let me know and I will see what I can do.
MC
Would love to see pictures of the inside..???
MC, Sorry for the assumption on the leather option but it must indeed be a very rare option in a 461.
But what it must surely be a mistake is the statement that the G was made in Germany. No G has ever been made in Germany, other than the finishing of the AMG ones. Your G, as most others, was made in Graz, Styria, Austria.
I would love to have a few high-res pictures of your G too.
Cheers
Now, now, Jesus,
Tsk.tsk. just because he got the better of you on the leather interior,
there is no need to-nit pick about where it was built
Marcus
now now boys
You are absolutely right. I should have just said made in 1996. I presume it was made in Austria like all the rest. As further colour, it was ordered by a Malay Timber company, but it never ended up being exported to Malaysia, since they went bust in the period between the order's being placed and delivery.
I've got all the original factory job cards and so on with it, but sadly not the order and so on. At some point, I must work out the name of the timber company, but that needs some time searching on the net.
It also seems to have rather larger tyres than standard on it. I don't know whether the previous owner did that, or whether it had that size from new. From memory, its got 235/70/16s on it, which is not what the owners manual in it says. Don't know There's plenty of life in them for now anyway.
I'll take some hi-res pics at the weekend and try to work out how to get them onto my work pc (somewhat neanderthally, I don't have working internet at home at the moment).

Whereabouts in London are you? I am in Hendon. If you're close, bring a cd or memory card and we can do it from my PC(8mb broadband 8) ).
Mercfan - I've pm'd you. MC
Thanks for that info gents, especially the g4rce site, very informative.
Now I know what I am looking for.....a G300 Turbo diesel !
