Transmission oils

I notice it takes at least 15-20 miles of dual carriageway driving before the transmission warms up properly (1988 460 5spd Getrag 300 GD(t) ).

I have seen a recommendation for Miller CRX 75W90 on the list which will cover both the SAE 80 of the transfer case and the SAE 90 of the diffs.

Any other thoughts.. synthetic seems a good idea but some folk had trouble with Redline oil messing up the synchro drag friction .. and so messing the gear change quality (not MB but Mazda).

And for the Gearbox it is down as ATF fluid .. not seen synthetic oil for that yet but it certainly has to do something for life under duress and change quality (well it works on non ATF boxes if the synchros do not mind). I wonder if non ATF would make things better .. ATF used to be there for the EP rating I thought? (Extreme pressure) but oils have moved on..

Guess it is time to bug Oilman (he pops up on all sorts of forums..)

Should be some fuel economy gains with synthetic too..

Check out http://www.opieoils.co.uk/performance_lubricants/ Amsoil have an AFT fully synth.

Redline MTL is used by many of the G folks on the US G forum for the transfer case as it’s the required GL 4 for syncro boxes. Its very expensive here though. It does keep the operating temp of the box down. I would agree that high quality synthetic are the way to go for all engine and transmissions if only for the increased film strength they offer.
