Good Morning,
My G, a 1984 280GEL converted six months ago with a 123 sourced 5 cyl diesel, is running well and used daily. In fact so much I have travelled more than 6,000 miles in the last seven weeks ! Earlier this morning travelling into Bristol my speedo went on strike !. The gearbox is the original 280 GE autobox and the effect on speedo was that it started to work lethargically and slow to respond and now it's stppoed working at all.
Is this the cable or speedo ? Any ideas ?
I am only really worried where a speed camera is at the bottom of a steep hill looking for 30 or 40mph plus speed limits, not 70!
Those with LWB five cylinder diesel Gees will understand !
Thanks
Andy Jones

Not anything useful to say, curious about rpm vis-a-vis road speed if you have retained the auto from the petrol though, different ratios surley required for lower revving diesel, it's probably the cable, I'm guessing, though if you retained the origional gearbox it should not have been disturbed ?, or is speedo off transfer box ?
Cheers ,
Marcus

99% is the speedo cable.

It's bolted on to the transfer box.

Fiddly to replace but not difficult if you are a rocket engineer!

Cheers

Marcus,
Good Morning and thank you for your response.
The four speed auto gearbox was off the original 280 petrol lump. Yes, I believe the ratios are not ideal, the acceleration (ponderous forward motion really) from standstill is very slow. Once the old girl is moving, especially on the flat and level roads, the speed is OK, but hills ARGHH !!! Looking on the bright side I have'nt had a speeding ticket since I bought this Gee and she will do 25/30 MPG irrespective of how I drive her or hows she's loaded. Yesterday was an early start from home, near Bath, up to Rotherham for a meeting, across to Cheshire and then home. Even got some snow under the wheels in Derbyshire. Ran faultlessy and not another Gee spotted all day, never mind EH!
Anyway, new speed cable to be ordered today.
Cheers Andy Jones.
PS Mortinson, I'm not a rocket engineer, if I was I'd be using an AMG or rabus beast, cos I could afford it then.
PPS Monsieur Greene, am family holidaying in Charente in the summer, how far to you? May come over and compare Wagens!
