How?

Easy, acquire a heater fan motor and associated air box from a mark 2 Vauxhall Astra. With a minor amount of surgery to the Astra plastic air box the entire assemble slots into the air intake of a G Wagen. So instead of sucking it’s now pushing air.

It’s easy to figure out what bits of plastic need to be removing once you offer it up to the G’s air intake. I used one of the cheap wood saws you can pick up for about a fiver at B&Q.

You have 4 wires coming from the fan motor. Brown is earth the other 3 are for the 3 speeds (east to figure by trial and error. Simply run 3 wires back to existing fan switch MB kindly mark them 1, 2 and 3. Remove existing and connect new. Behind the air filter you will find where the existing wiring passes through the bulkhead, along with some spate grommets.

So I’m now driving around with it on max. and cooking myself………nice :D

Just in case you are cringing at the thought of putting Vauxhall bits on your G, it’s a Bosch part.

Astra Fan Motor in 460G air box.

As you can see no messing with the dash, I've read somewhere that it takes a MB mechanic 8hrs to replace a G fan motor.

Got the fan motor from the local scrappy, 2 10mm bolts are all that hold it in to the Astra. Once you have ripped away the plastic trim covering it it's a 2 min. job to remove. Paid £5.
May need to add some weather proofing to electrical stuff at some point.
Also although it has a good flow in to cabin I may seal the gaps around it to improve it efficiency.

To get at the fan motor switch:
Prise off knob.
Remove nut holding switch
Push 3 heater controls over to left
Prise out right half of heater slider/fan motor trim
There are 4 wires on to fan switch, you are only interested in the ones marked 1, 2 and 3. They are the 3 speeds. I think it’s the pink wire that is the live feed.
Run 3 new wires from the fan motor. The brown at the fan motor is the earth, attach that to any convenient clean body/earth point.
Connect 3 new wires, use trial and error to figure which speed.

Anyway all in all I was very pleased with myself, however see Pride Before a Fall in G Chat:evil:

Unfortunately not, it’s actually very quiet.

You may however be interested in phase 2 of my Astra fan motor solution.

DIY supercharging!

Get Astra fan motor and plumb it in to the engine air intake.
After exhaustive research I don’t see any flaws in my plan apart from the huge increase in torque I anticipate. I seem to remember that the transfer box on the G is only good for 800Nm so I may not actually be able to switch it on to full speed. Also it has already been subject to a patent by someone called Dr B Jobbe, but who cares sue me!

So I will soon be opening my e-bay shop offering TUV approved Bosche DIY supercharging kits (may charge less for the Lucas, prince of darkness version). Should give the chip retailer guys a run for their money :D

Re: 25 Minute / £5 Heater Fan Replacement.

I wouldnt worry too much about the Transfer box, if it can cope with a 560 V8 I reckon it will cope with that. One guy had a twin turbo fitted to a 280 G, just blew the engine in the end. Having looked at Dave G tech site on how to replace the heater motor, your way may look heath robinson, but i know what I'd rather do. I got the hump plumbing in the washing machine today and ending up smashing the plugs of the wall with rage.

 Hi Russ,

I have a 1990 280 with a faulty heater fan. I am very interested in your fix. I can't however open your file astrafan2.jpg. any chance of a copy. Like so many before me I have been trying to remove the dash, without much luck.

Best regards

Hi David
460 blower motor can be removed from the air intake duct in the engine bay ............................ WITH NIMBLE FINGERS!!!   reach down and to the rear to find the fan blades. apply a heat source to the hub of the blades and gently pull the blade assembly off the motor shaft ...this will allow you to reach in and release the motor from the heater box housing.***.the wiring is not very long..if however the speed control resistor board is damaged this is more difficult to access...to replace the motor heat the fan blade hub and draw it of the shaft.... attach the wires.. clip the motor into the housing ... reheat the hub and push it into position ...Job done!! as they say.....I can supply a new blower motor to the manufacturers part number for GBP 118 + postage
