wine capacity
Assuming Bill Moss can fix my SWB 280GE yet again(!) before next weekend, I'm planning a 'booze cruise' to Calais - how many (12 bottle) cases of wine can I carry assuming I fold the rear seat and taking the weight / payload into account????! :D

My missus used to work the ferries she says you can take unlimited now. PM me if you like and il give you an idea of all the places to go if you dont know

Thanks Kashi, this is what I need! How did the springs handle that weight? did you check if you were near the bump stops? I make that 8 litres a case x 20 cases = 160 litres of beer - or nearly 18 cases of wine!
If the G isn't ready, (but I have a hunch it will be now I know why you need it) you'd be able to take your Merc Saloon. Probably carry more. Don't take your Porsche, that won't carry much, and your "Harley" even less :D

yes Bill, you're right I do have alternatives but, faced with a long drive to two foreign countries, what 460-series G-Wagen owner would choose to take a large supremely comfortable 150mph air conditioned leather-clad Uber-Saloon at 20mpg if he could go at 65mph / 15mpg in his 'G'????!!!! :lol:
OK, thanks again Greeney. Now, who knows the 'payload' of a 280GE expressed in kilos / bottles of wine?? - or if Bill can't fix it by Wed night - the payload of a 500SEL??

Thanks Greeney but it's not Custome and Excise I'm worried about but the load capacity of the truck! I need someone to work out how many cardboard boxes each containing 12 bottles of wine will fit in the load space of a SWB G-Wagen without exceeding the legal weight limit! Any of you gout-ridden owners able to offer any experience??
