Hi, I have been losing water ( roughly 2 litres per week ) for the past fortnight. Have kept replacing with correct anti-freeze/water. Having checked hoses, water pump , rad etc all appear dry and leak free, got underneath truck today, placed sheet under and let it run, sure enough drips started to fall imediately around gearbox housing just to the right side by starter motor, obviousely its finding its way there from somewhere but could,nt see anything with torch, its running down the seam of the block, could it be a core plug?. Perhaps this leak has been causing my bad starting problems as well seeing as its right by my starter, (I think I remeber a thread about drilling a hole etc) anyway any suggestions would be great.

regards Frannie

Frannie if i remember rightly when i did the over haul on my wet side there is a little block drain plug on the right hand side of the block, could it be so simple? Lets hope so :-)

Re: Losing water

Poor starting?

Do you mean the starter motor fails to spin up to speed or it churns over for a while before it starts?

First one maybe water getting in to starter from core plug. Second one more serious, could be head gasket.

How about using a small mirror and looking from the top down with a torch?

Re: Losing water

bear with me it nearly dark here in france il photo 2moz.
someone might come up with photo or pic sooner but on my diesel it just above starter motor. I think it also made of aluminium so could be corroded so be very careful taking it out, it could break.

Re: Losing water

Hi, been under truck today, the leak is not coming from the core drain plug, its bone dry ran the engine observed leak not coming from plug. Thinking now its maybe something to do with the heater hoses, the car does smell a bit antifreeze with the vents open and the heater blowing, any suggestions.

regards Frannie.

Thanks Bill, have spoken to my mechanic about the problem. Are there any tips he should know as regards to fixing it properly, and secondly I have a leak from the differential resevoir have replaced fluid but lost it all next day, I will get him to have a look, is this a common problem ( have not used the diffs since buying it in May last year). Thanks again for advice, Love my G more than ever......
