hello all,

after reading certain things ive decided an lpg conversion could be a good idea for me.

from what ive seen on here robs conversion looked very good value and very well done, does anyone (even rob) have contact details for the company he used.

also where do people think the best place to have the tank is? is there anyway of not having it in the rear? (ive got a swb)

any help would be very appreciated.

Tom

Re: Looking At LPG Conversion

From your location these people could be too far away for you but the quality of the install is superb.
They have converted my previous Audi and just B4 xmas they quoted me £1500 to do a Saab turbo (tricky conversion due to turbo and Saab engine management).

Also done a friend Vtec Honda. So a basic merc 280 should be easy for them. They also have a rolling road if you’re interested in bhp.

A&B Garage, Hawarden, Nr Chester. I’ll dig out the phone number if your interested.

Re: Looking At LPG Conversion

I bought a new conversion kit off eBay for £550 and fitted it myself, had very few problems with it and returns 10-12mpg out of a 1982 280GE auto depending on what I'm towing at the time...

Re: Looking At LPG Conversion

LPG and NPG conversions are about 300-400 pounds in Bulgaria. I travel there every 2-3 weeks on business so if anyone wants to have this done or organise a group conversion then let me know I can put you in touch with our contacts there. Bulgaria will be in EU in couple of days time so no need to worry about taxes etc.

Of course travel costs need to be taken into account to see the total figure but going there by road the staying in Varna for 2-3 days can be looked at a holiday/business one trip.

Beer is 35P a pint there.

Re: Looking At LPG Conversion

I was interested in biodesel but can't see m'self coping with all the 'bureaucratic' obstacles :( ... So i decided to go for lpg :) ... A local powershift-list conversion company last year sent me the following reply to my cost query -
"Unfortunately, I would not recommend a
conversion on the G wagon due to the fact that they do not accept any
multipoint/sequential LPG systems as they are fitted with mechanical fuel
injection. The G Wagon can also be very susceptible to backfiring if a
single point LPG system is used, hence the reason I would not convert one. I
am sorry we are unable to help you."
But but but... ! What do GWOA lpg zen masters think? (are you backfiring all over this green and pleasant land?)

Re: Looking At LPG Conversion

Hi vj the approved single point gas distributor fitted to the Jetronic fuel injection system on the G' both 230ge and 280ge incorporate a blowback facility...however if fuel management is tuned correctly backfiring does not occur....

Re: Looking At LPG Conversion

Well from their response I would avoid them anyway. Either too incompetent or too lazy to do the job.

Also I don't see why a multi point closed loop system couldn't be fitted. Something's are missing on a G such as crank position sensors and oxygen sensors but these can be retro fitted if you know what you are doing.

Re: Looking At LPG Conversion

I had ecogas fit a single point system to my230 auto, Five years trouble free motoring at £0.17 a ltr, I then bought a 280 and fitted it on there but needed to change the regulator, it back fired twice after collecting it, only to find the new HT leads the another company fitted were useless, put the old merc ones back on and low and behold, 3 years trouble free motoring. Thats not to say singlepoint is not without its faults, however its down to a few things.

CORRECT installation and set up, and not too quick with the change over switch from petrol to LPG as the delay could well cause a back fire,if you press on the throttle when the switch over happens. Treat it like a lady, slow caressing movements, and she'll appreciate it.
