HELP! Anyone know how the instrument binnacle is accesssed on a 463.Its LHD but I guess thats irrelevant,I need to remove the complete speedo, tacho, face out and replace it with UK spec. There is no evidence of clips screws or any fixings.Apparently the unit connects into the loom on just one plug. :?

Re: 463 Instrument panel?

The instrument cluster can be removed using an MB L-shaped tool that looks a bit like a blank Allen key with a shorter short-section, and a handle on the long section. This little tool is inserted at the side of the panel (try not to scratch the surrounding plastic), near the level of the +/- Reset buttons, and once inside, turned a quarter of a turn towards the panel (it will latch onto a depression in the side of the panel), and pull gently, one side at a time, bit by bit, until you get the thing out freely. The MB manual describes having two of these tools, one in each hand, and pulling on each one a little at a time.
Of course most of us don't have access to this tool, and as such you will have to improvise with some wire or a small flat screwdriver. A couple of things worth noting from experience:
1. Complete removal of the instrument cluster isn't possible without first removing the steering wheel (which is a hassle if you have an airbag, fairly easy if you don't)
2. Make sure the plug at the back is properly seated, last time MB removed our cluster, some of the background lights stopped working (they needed some tapping every now and then).

Enjoy working on your G...

I think Roly made two of these tools from two shirt hangers made of wire. They sometimes pop up on Ebay but at a price.

Thanks very much for the help I really am grateful! The old dash will be available somewhat cheaper than the £747 for the new one. I will let you know when the mission is completed,if all goes well I will be happy to see someone else benefit if not I will want an arm and a leg for the dash and two headlights from an expat!!
