Does £75 + vat seem a lot for this, from local mb dealer. No one else seems to be able to get them.

Re: fuel pump relay

Sounds about right. I had mine changed about three years ago. 90 pounds seems to ring a bell.

Re: fuel pump relay

Ah this sounds like a problem I had yesterday..after reading other posts on the subject. After a longish journey (30mins?) with some hi-speed driving, I shut the engine off for a minute or 2, then tried to restart, but it would not start up. Engine turns but no ignition, tried the key a few times to listen for the "whirr" of the pump, but no sound.
Went under the car, thinking I know where the pump is, maybe a few knocks will set it straight, but couldn't find the pump! Didn't know the locations on an LWB G500 and SWB 300GE would be different! I am talking about the '91 300GE here...

So if anybody knows where the pump is, or which of the relays in the following pic is the fuel one, do share your wisdom

After about 10mins fumbling around the car, I try the ignition again and the fuel pump can be heard once more, and I am on my way. Weird!

Re: fuel pump relay

Oh incidentally does anyone know what that thing I'm holding in my hand is. It has numbers around it (similar to the ignition timing retard switch under the bonnet, but with numbers instead, and a lead tamper-proof seal with MB on it).

Re: fuel pump relay

Found the relay part number and possible location (for the SWB300GE):
A0035452405
RELAY
EUR 149.58 (about £100), just to confirm the silly prices quoted above!

#58/62 appears to be the one

Re: fuel pump relay

...and I have found the pump, under the left rear wheel arch. Condition of the pump on the outside looks fine, though the connections and filter look poorly. It makes a varying noise as my speed varies in driving, so I suspect it is a matter of time before it packs up. The next bext thing is to change the fuel filter, €38.74, another small job for when I have the time!

Re: fuel pump relay

there are normally two pumps , one is limp home mode. Most reasons for relay failure is "PEOPLE NEVER CHANGE THE FUEL FILTERS ENOUGH" HOW MANY MORE TIMES WE GOTTA TELL YER!!!!!!!!

Re: fuel pump relay

Cheers for that PP, that will stick in my mind for someeee time (incidentally that's the first time i've been told, so your typing is not wasted :P ), I think the next 2 bits I will order are a new oil AND fuel filter. Any pointers on how to make the change less messy would be appreciated, I once half-started on changing a G500 filter, then got fuel all over the place and decided I'd better leave it to the dealer, but the location was a bit less accessible.

Re: fuel pump relay

That funny thing with numbers on adjusts your emissions at manufacture and should be sealed, only adjusted by a dealer.
