Re: Mercedes-Benz Makes a Bigger ML: the GL-Class

Just back from Austria. I have seen the new G-Wagen. Now PLEASE bear in mind I am just as passionate about the old (square) G shape as all of you. BUT the new G although based on the M class, I do have to say is very very different from the M class. I hate to say it but in my humble (& square shape biased opinion) the new G is how I would expect the old G to look if it was re-designed & brought up to date. Belive me it looks nothing like an M class in the metal. The fit & finish is up there with the new E-Class & the new S-Class ( I drove one whilst over there, & what a car) I have asked my chap in Austria to see how much a RHD one would be top spec, designo havana & designo pebble beige & poplar wood. he reckons about £7-8K under UK list delivery 1st qtr 06.
I will let you know. He is also looking into the new/old G-Class soon to re-launched still built in Graz with some exterior mods & the new E-Class interior with some new S-Class techno bits, but he thinks this model will only be LHD and much more expensive than the american built new G.
I'll let you know.

So rod, you must have by now taken delivery of your new G400???. Does this mean this may be for sale now that you have seen the new GL??.

Interested to see what cosmetic changes the 463 series is going to look like.

The new GL in Austria? Perhaps someone at DC has realised that to be worthy enough to have a "G" in it's name, it has to last 10000 hours hard driving on the Schockl. I see a name change on the horizon

Oh Well! I never did find the right G400 yet so I am currently G-Less. As to buying a new 2006 model G, well we shall have to see how much & what's in the kitty. But if the right G400 comes along I might plump for that. The cosmetic changes for the current G, I assume will restricted to bolt on bits & maybe some trim. The interior is the main change (or so I understand) updated to include the new E-Class switchgear ect. I have resigned myself to being G-Less till next autumn, but we shall see what comes out of Austria.

This is way too much! Would you please refrain from using the "new G" or "new G-Wagen" name to refer to that pile of rubbish otherwise known as the GL? Is this too much to ask to nurse my sensitive ears?

Even the article is sensitive about my ears:

The saying "Cat amongst the pigions comes to mind". To one & all, please accept my apologies, you are quite right. The new G or GL or whatever, will not replace our square G. But it is still a nice car. As I said I have not driven the new "GL" so I don't know what it is really like. I have driven the new S Class & that is a magnificent machine. Anyway I off tomorrow again to Austria till Christmas. So a happy Christmas to you all.
Sad Fact 1: MB are only to make RHD G is G55 form & not the 400cdi.
Sad Fact 2: My wife drive's an A Class MB.
Sad Fact 3: Since I sold my beloved G500 my sole transport has been an MB Vaneo.

Happy Christmas to you too Rod and apoligies accepted but pity that you sold your G500 only to regret it...
