Just bought a 1980 230G
I just bought a 1980 230G with only 17K miles on it. Got it for a great price for it. Just wondering if there are things that I should look out for. There is a small bit of rust but that is easly fixed. So glad I found this site.
17K!!!!! Are you sure it hasn't had a new speedo. That's a remarkably low mileage for a 25 years old G. Well done! It sounds like a good find. Does it have a service record? Hopefully it will have been serviced on a time basis, otherwise you could have some pretty dodgy lubricants in the engine and transmission/axles/swivels etc. Probably worth replacing the brake fluid, and the hydraulic fluid in the diff-lock system too.
Look forward to hearing all about it as you get into it. :D
Wow, that G looks remarkably well for such an old G-Wagen.
Don't get me wrong but most folks who are swindled on a 25-year-old G tell the same story... "it was the G of a 115-year-old grandma who got it as her birthday present when she was 90 and she was too frail to drive it and blah, blah, blah...." but in your case that truck looks incredibly fresh so I have to give credit to your story.
Give us the VIN (by PM if you so choose) and we'll try to find something else about her history (the G's, not grandma's).
Cheers
:D good luck with that
by the condition of the body panels i would defo agree with that milage
there couldnt be to many fire,s in his locality
Well, the Russian G Club site is down but entering the VIN in my EPC I found that, although it has a Mercedes chassis number, it bears code Z86 in its datacard which literally means "Steyr-Daimler-Puch" marketing area. This, in my book, can only mean that somebosy ordered this G-Wagen in a SDP country (possibly Austria or Switzerland) but specified it to be a Mercedes (badged as a Mercedes). I cannot explain the Puch badge on the bonnet, though.
According to the datacard, the truck comes with the usual equipment of early Gs, like, front and rear diff locks, front and rear reinforced springs, a trailer coupling "mouth type", power steering, spare wheel carrier swivel type (but no double tail doors?) and folding seat bench in passenger compartment with safetly belts. Obviously no luxuries at all.
Judging by the chassis number, the truck was made in early 1980.
Something intriguing is that the original paint code of your truck was 6880 "Agave Green" (same as my G!) which obviously has nothing to do with the current one. Why did they not order the G in red rather than having to repaint it?
You sure got a fantastic deal! That is cheap even by UK standards -considering state of the truck-.
By the way, the Russian site is now up and running and yes, all the numbers are matching:

Note that the dealer which initially sold this G is quoted as "Dealer Steyr Puch (597)" which is coherent with the fact that it was sold in Austria.
Would love to see some hi-res pictures of the G when you have it "in your paws"
Cheers
Looks like a power outlet socket at the right hand base of windscreen too, presumably for a hand held search light or similar. Is that the corrosion you mentioned, to the right of the socket? Looks a bit like a hole from here; not uncommon.
It is possible the Puch badge was stuck on by the previous owner to make a point. It doesn't look like the one that normally goes on the bonnets of Puch market vehicles. I have a couple of SDP badges on my old bus just to ensure people know the true heritage of the G. It's a "Steyr Daimler Puch" thing! I know which side my bread is buttered on!
All in all, a great looking and very original wagon. Good find. Well done!
Mike
It came out of the German Fire bragade and was the Fire Chiefs Car. So it is fire engine red.

I got it from a Unimog importer and he gave it the big once over doing all that you suggest.
It will be here Monday so I am really excited.
That will look so great next to my Unimog and the fact that my wife let me have them both... WOW what a catch she was.
