Hi, Just about to buy a GDT290 new & wondering is it going to be noisy with a softtop? It's an auto also, so will it be suited for towing?
Are parts likely to be a problem with this model & why have they changed this engine? Were they underpowered or thirsty? Thanks Padr.

Re: GDT290

A new GDT290? It must have been in stock a long time then. The soft-top will flap a bit in the breeze, but not too bad. Certainly not underpowered at 122bhp and lots of lovely torque from well down the rev range, so excellent for towing. Not particularly thirsty either as long as you remember it has the aerodynamics of a housebrick so keep the speed down to a muted roar. Cruise at 50-60mph and you'll be surprised at how economical it is. They changed the engine 'cos that is the way Mercedes operate....always the latest motor used across the range in as many models as possible. The current equivalent is the 2.7 diesel or 270. Even the Sprinter uses it. Where are you getting it from? It wouldn't be olive green by any chance, would it?

Padr,
You are quite right, disclose nowt till the deal is done, though I am deeply curious as are others I presume as to where you found such a rare beast.
They, whoever they are, dont happen to have any more do they?
I hope you will post photos once you are in possession.
Regards,
Marcus

Hi Marcus,
Sure i'll post photo's & as far as it's location in concerned it's been mentioned on this very site before. I think the price would put most in England off, but the way VRT is here in Ireland it seemed to make more sense compaired to other Gs which could have €10000.00 in VRT.

Aha! Now I know where you got it from and the story behind it. It was nearly mine once, but I couldn't find the readies and a very good friend had it delivered from Graz instead. Thought I recognised that front garden and the view. Glad somebody has bought it at last. You'll love it! Being right hand drive, it's a very rare beast indeed. Look after it.

Re: GDT290

Padr, from my limited knowledge of these vehicles (the soft top variety that is) they are quite noisey on the highway. One of our Australian bretheren has a very rare early 80's 300GD 461 lwb soft top - before you all start saying that the 461 is only early 90's I can assure you that this military spec vehicle is also W461 chassis number - and I know that he finds it particularly noisey driving down the highway. In my short drive in, and of the vehicle, I can certainly say that the flapping roof adds to the already significant noise from the the spartan interior (devoid of sound proofing). For Roly - yes the windscreen does fold down

If you are interested in having a look at the vehicle I am referring to, you can find some quite nice photos in the gallery section of the US Forum under user name "Wolf". (Just search for wolf and you will find a post or to from him which will take you to his profile and gallery). His looks great with the Wheel Arch Flares, Factory Alloys and white paint (all original).

Here I've saved you the trouble. Wolf Gallery

I hope that this is of some help and good luck with the G. I'd have it in an instant if I could get it into Australia.

John

Not only does the front screen fold down on to the bonnet, but the wiper arms disengage from their shaft splines and the blades fold so that they lie flat along the scuttle to avoid being damaged by the screen. Neat. We have the same mechanism on the soft-top Pinzgauers.

Yes, it was brand new.... and it took a long time to sell.

The one in Scotland is more likely to be asking 25k which is too much cash compared to the other one...

Re: GDT290

Yes it's expensive but i wanted a new one which will hopefully last me years & i didn't see any for £15000 around myself unfortunitly. Are there any more??
There always seem to be bargins to be had when deals are done!
How come the £15000 one took a long while to sell?
Now that it's on it's way i want to fit a height adjustable tow bar, are there many options available?
Can i change from low to high on the move & how is it done?
Padr.

Re: GDT290

No, I don't think that there are any more around. In fact I believe that yours must be the last unregistered G290GDT in existence -civilian or military, LHD or RHD.

Not the first time that question has been asked:

The height adjustable tow-bar might be tricky tho'. Do you have the NATO style hook fitted or a 50mm ball hitch?

Re: GDT290

Thanks Mortinson & Quercus,
Are there any models of G wagon being made RHD apart from very expensive ones?
My GDT 290 has a NATO hitch fitted, i should be able to fabricate a height adjustable type but is there space for bracing bars?? Any pic available?
Thanks in advance. Padr
