I have had an ongoing ignition problem with my 300GDL for the past 3 years. Turn key till glow plug indicator goes out and then to the 2nd position where it normally fires up on the button. However, sometimes it doesn't. I have had relays fitted, the starter off and checked 3 times, an immobiliser removed and still it happens. The car has been flat-bedded by the AA twice in the last two weeks. Auto-electrician has no hair left to pull out. Any ideas.

Re: Ignition problems

When you say it "Dosen't", do you mean nothing at all? No spinning, whirring from starter motor? No clicks etc?

A little more info may help diagnose.

(I'm thinking starter motor - happened to me intermittently)

Re: Ignition problems

Nothing at all, except maybe a little click when the key is released from the second ignition position. It used to be that you could sit trying maybe 50 times and it would suddenly fire up but on the two recent occasions I tried it so much that the battery wore down. Then the car gets lifted to the garage where they charge the battery, try to start it and it fires first time.

Re: Ignition problems

how did the immobiliser work, did it shut of fuel pump or electrics. If its spinning and not starting, get someone to check to see if when you turn on ignition it opens fuel shut off, or is this by vacuum with 300GD's.

Re: Ignition problems

It's by vacuum on GDs. The immobiliser was one I had never seen before. It had a disc on thre key ring and unless this was in close proximity to the ignition barrel then it wouldn't start. All the lights would light up and you would get to position 1 but when you went to position 2 there would be nothing.
