[b] I just fell for a 300GD (a 1986 with patchy history) I spotted with a for sale sign in the window, I know little of these motors except they have a very good reputation... I have two jap motors on the drive one a workhorse that loves off road the other a road eating turbo. Both very reliable.I want to trade the car for this G but am unsure about which models are most desirable/durable, basically I want someone with knowledge to advise me differently to my locals (how much is he paying you to take it off his hands etc.) Advance thanks

Re: buying one in ireland

test drive a g diesel first, then see what you think. if you like it then ask us more questions on what you should look out for in good and bad points.

Re: buying one in ireland

I test drove this one last Friday, the guy was very happy to let me test it he said it would take a while for the diffs to warm and quieten...he was right cos after about 4 miles they did get quiet. a sharp turnaround didnt seem to cause the cv joints too knock. it did seem slow up thru the gears but seemed comfortable at 58mph, which he says is returning 28mpg. the brake pedal felt like it needed a very strong push( i reckon it would struggle to lock the wheels in an emergency stop) and he said he had the master cylinder changed and it was like that since it was chaged. bleeding the system was his suggested remedy. It had a5spd manual box which felt a little vague but not to a point that would feel like she wasnt going to select the gear required or exactly when asked.
there was some cancer showing around the rear lights and on the ledge where the lower window rubber meets the door skin. not major . the interior was in surprisngly good order .
I'm not a badge snob and really think most people dont know what a G wagon is , I want reliability with low depreciation (dont we all?)

Re: buying one in ireland

Jdub,
How far from Benone are you, come up this Sunday and be enlightened!
Having both 4 & 5 speed diesel models, your description of the 5 speed sounds spot on, the 4 speed is a sweeter box, though a few inexpensive bushings on the linkages may be due on the one you drove, I cannot comment about noises from the diffs, cold or warm, from my experience though the engine is noticably more sluggish when cold.
Brake system very straight forward, btw the pedal IS heavy on both our older ones
These older diesels usually go on for ever & ever !
Main weakness, as you are already aware, are tinworm at rear and from my own experience water getting in thro/past wiper spindles and/or heater/blower unit
Welcome ( provisionally of course ) to the club,
Marcus

Hi Marcus, I just had a quick look at the map and I seem to need one on a larger scale!!! (cant find Benone) I'm in Donegal and might just take you up on that offer... ps The G in question is 1986 with environ 167k. would you have a stab at a price in Euro?

Jdub,
Ferry to Magilligan from Greencastle, does it still operate during winter? Benone is the beach from Magilligan Point to Downhill,
PS
perhaps you would bring a bulk tank of good cheap diesel over with you -- save us the diversion !
See you there,
Marcus

Well thats not too far!
I'll get back in touch soon to confirm I'll most likely have a compadre with me. As for the diesel.....I'll see how many gerry cans I can squeeze into a nissan 200.

Re: buying one in ireland

Ha ha! it sounds like it could be educational, I hope to see you all there at some point and appreciate the invite. I certainly wont be in a LR and think a 200sx will look equally out of place.... I'll keep my distance.
Thanks again
J

hi jdub :D
 if its me you are referring to above
i pm,ed and emailed you to come up to the meeting as you were looking to come up as per your posts say,
you answered all my pm,s and emails until a few days b4 the meet
i advised you to ask the guy that was selling the irish 300gd swb to come up to the meet,so some of the gwoa members could have a look at your future puchase to steer you in the right direction,as well as giving you my irish and uk mobile numbers you didnt contact him or myself to let us know that you were coming to the meet
The saturday (the day b4 the meet) my colleague in vodafone rang me to see if i was one of the gwoa members that was going to the meet the next day as there was one of his customers asking him if he knew me ,and could i ring him ,so i did to get a better turn out at the meeting
this is the garage man in your town that i bought the two projects from
who asked me to have a look and bid for them, i in turn took another gwoa member to veiw them with me and he thought they were a good investment
The G that you were interested in IS STILL THERE AWAITING YOU
as it wasnt offered to me for sale as it was on hold for you as were trying to sell your nissan 200sx
So i didnt buy what you were buyin and you never told me that you were lookin at buyin 2 for parts

but remember in the future BUY IT DONT TALK ABOUT IT
and reference to the comment you made BELOW

Re: buying one in ireland

Dear Foneman,
I reply refraining from using italics, bold print, underlining and block capitals, I would rather have used a PM but since you set the standards there I shall follow suite.
I started this ball rolling and being the pauper that I am (without the price of a drink), I knew, at the time , I was gonna have a lead in time before I could make a purchase and in hindsight should have witheld all info until such time as I was in a position to make a decision.
Initially a deal on a 2nd hand G in a small town with two donor G's available looked extremely tempting even to a man of my meagre means. I unsuspectingly informed you of all the above G's and as a result am left with an option that looks a whole lot less promising than it was.
As for the moral high ground that you stand on (which is hard to see from down here); You speak of not buying a G that wasnt even offered to you,and I dont think the paradox is intentional because if it was I assume you would have underlined it or something.
All your good will towards me has paid dividends and you are now the proud owner of two more thanks to my eager fingers which I wish you every success with. Since we became such great mates I thought you might have mentioned in passing that you were coming to ballyshannon on a G mission but you didnt seem to be as enthusiastic to PM me on that. I assume it slipped your mind and I guess thats karma.

I am now completely bored with this and obviously dont belong to this circle.
Yours Truly
