Getting the NCT (MoT-uk) done next week on the German originated 463.
I've been told headlights may have to be replaced to make them legal!
Has any of your left-hookers gone through this process for MoT? Surely lights can be adjusted?

Yes, I had to have new headlights fitted, and the speedo had to be changed to MPH and I needed a receipt to prove this was done! sorry.....
However this was on a citroen xantia, not a Merc.

Re: LHD headlights

I have been through that twice, having owned two LHD 300 GDSs (one 460 and the other a 463) in the UK.

You have to change the headlights to the "driving on the left" spec as MB puts it.

Also, you have to move the rear foglight to the RHS (it should be on the side where the driver is supposed to sit).

But as long as it is a personal import, you don't need to replace the to "kilometer" to a "mileometer"

Incidentally, I did not manage to sell the set of RHD headlights which became surplus to requirements when I moved back to Spain a few weeks back. They would fit any 460 and early 463 (if you can live without the height adjustment). I could be persuaded to part company with them for a nominal amount of beer tokens plus postage.

In any event, any Hella factor would sell them to you for a mere £26 + VAT each.

Cheers

Taken from the DVLA website: 'how to import a car'

http://www.dft.gov.uk/stellent/groups/dft_roads/documents/page/dft_roads...

It states here that the car should show MPH so that is what I did, dont know what the insurance issues would be if involved in an accident?

Section 2: Technical requirements
What you need to do depends mainly on the age of the vehicle and the standards applicable in its original sales market. Generally speaking, you are unlikely to have significant problems importing a vehicle from the European Union except to ensure that the lighting and mirrors are set up for left hand traffic and the speedometer includes an miles per hour display. Cars from other parts of the world might need extensive modification before they can be used in Britain. You should not assume that a vehicle which seems to be similar in appearance is identical to a model already available in Britain. Vehicles outwardly similar to European-specification models, but intended for other markets, can often be unsuitable for use in Britain without some modification.

Re: LHD headlights

That's good to know (what an invaluable fountain of information this site is for a G novice like myself.)

Since Ireland has now gone km the speedo is fine.

Thanks Mortinson for the offer but the Hella price seems resonable enough and the NCT test is next Friday.
Who knows maybe you'll need them if you make it back to rhd world some time in the future.
