I have recently bought a w461 1999 290GTD. The roof lining in the middle is sagging, although externaly still in very good condition.
Can this be repaired or will I need to replace it?
Is the lining glued to the roof?

Thanks
Johann

Johann,
Thank you for a query I can actually offer useful advice on, NO it is not glued & ours sagged too until I removed it -- which was surprising difficult as it is very stiff & a tight fit -- I plan when refitting it to use a pad or two of of "velcro" to keep it up better without being permenent.
PS --above with respect to a van but presumably applicable.

Thanks Marcus

It should be applicable to any G I think. It just doesn't make sense. Mine looks like new but is sagging. Is there any plywood compound in the lining which could sag if wet?
I'm thinking of buying a new middle section.

Johann,
Both our 1989 460 LWB and the 461 1998 van are the same as far as I know, in that there is a section of roof lining that ends at the "B" pillar and then another single piece for the rest of the rear of the vehicle.
I have the rear piece out at the moment, it is not reinforced with anything as such excepting that the material is stiff in itself -- hence the difficulty in removing -- mind you I was working on my own, I choose to release it at the rear first, perhaps there is a better way.
The roof lining is only held around the edges, not supported in any way mid span, and yes it sags, enough to affect headroom.
I suppose a cruder "quickfix" would be to pierce the lining where it is sagging and pump in some silicone/mastic/adhesive and prop it up until it cures.

Doh ! ! ! -- just spotted "CABRIO" in your details, so above presumably gibbersh to you

i had a problem with a roof sagging before (not a g wagen)
i soaked the roof with water from pressurised water containers
and proped the roof into place with wooden batons and put a small heater into the area and left it in overnight and it cured the problem
maybe woth a try :o

Hi Marcus

I do have a Cabrio as well. But in this case I'm refering to the w461 LWB I have recently acquired. I haven't updated my profile yet :)
Thus all you've said is valid.
It sounds like a new panel won't solve my problem?
