TIMING

HI MATE
IT TURNS OVER BUT THATS IT DOESNT CATCH ? JUST TURNS
WHEN IT WENT, I JUST TURNED IT OVER AS NORMAL AND THEN A LOAD POP AND A BIT OF SMOKE CAME FROM THE ENGINE AND THEN IT WOULDNT START,
IT ALWYAS STARTED ON A SECOND TURN BEFORE IT WENT WRONG ? DO YOU THINK THAT WAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH IT ?

WHEN THE AA MAN GOT IT WORKING IT BACKFIRED A LOT AND THEN WOULD JUST CUT OUT.
ANY HELP YOUR GIVING ME IS A BIG HELP PETER CHEERS

I take it you have checked to see if it has a spark on all plugs, does sound like timing but more drastic, I have known the 230 engine to break timing chains even at 50,000 miles. was it always a good starter prior to this, although you say it was sluggish, have you driven any other 230's to see the difference. Can you not get it to a garage or is it the expense. its going to be a process of elmination, check spark, check fuel delivery.

When you say it would start 2nd time, how long were you turning it over first time. When starting G you should always turn on ignition, wait for 2-3 seconds for fuel pump to reach pressure then start. the 230 should start on the button, 280s can flood themselves at times. do you have a gas conversion?????.

Try something else as its backfired, take the airfilter housing off from the inlet manifold, (big black pipe from air filter box to inlet) ie what looks like the carburetor. You will see a plate with a bolt through it, this is the volumetric plate, this get sucked down which in turn opens the valve in the fuel head to allow more fuel in,see if you can push this plate down freely, have the ingition on at this time as you push it down you should see it spurt fuel in the chamber, what can happen when it back fires is the plate gets pushed upwards and gets stuck.

Also below the carburetor looking thingy is a rubber gasket between this and the inlet manifold which is held on by a jubilee clip, see if this has blown out. This has an adverse effect on the air mixture and draws in too much air which can cause back fire and non starting when cold.

have a happy sunday

HI PETER, GOOD COMMENTS!
WELL ITS HAD ALL NEW SPARK PLUGS FITTED INC DISI CAP ROTOR ARM.
WHEN THE AA MAN GOT IT GOING HE TOOK OFF THE AIR FILTER AND PUSHED DOWN THAT DIAPHRAM THING AND IT WOULD REV IT BUT BAD BACKFIRING.
I NEVER REALISED YOU HAD TO WAIT A BIT ON TURNING IT OVER ? I WOULD JUST SWITCH IT ROUND AND THEN HAVE TO DO IT A SECOND TIME TO START IT OVER.. IL TRY THAT NEXT TIME.
IL CHECK IN TO THE SEAL BEING BLOWN IS THAT UNDER THAT DIAPHRAM THING ?
IT HAS NO GAS CONVERSION JUST NORMAL PETROL 230 AUTO.
