Hi, got an odd problem here. I have an intermitent starting fault, this morning got in car to take kids to school it would not start, nothing no noise from starter no click, this has happened about a dozen times , I think its linked to the alarm/immobiliser, because if you re lock the car wait 5 mimutes or so it starts, does this sound familiar to anybody, the battery is fine, the car runs fine it just seems odd like the car is immobilsed.Any help would be appreciated it started up fine this afternoon, but its really annoying not knowing whether it will start, we love this car and want to do all we can to make it better.

thanks Frannie

intermitent starting fault

Hey Frannie - nah not spotted you yet!!
i had a new alarm fitted when i bought my G and had a similar problem, i narrowed it down to the fact that when i drove with the lights on and then finished driving it wouldn't re-start for quite a while. Took it back to the guys who fitted it soon sorted.

get it down to your nearest auto electrician, or I can give you a number of a mobile guy who is great, he's and aussie and will visit you on site.

Re: intermitent starting fault

Hi everybody, re starting problem. Its still happening did not want to start this morning, after about 5 mins she fired up ran a bit rough for a minute or two , then shes fine. Happened the other day I just kept the key in the full position and after about 3 seconds she fired. I think its electrical rather than starter motor, if Peter Perfect reads this can he give me the number of the mobile electrician he recommended earlier. As to the other problems mentioned yes you guys were right it was a bad earth all sorted now, and had brake pads and disc's fitted got rid of the pulsing pedal immediately. Has anybody out there got a central locking mechanism solenoid for a 88 280ge drivers door, and lastly has anybody viewed my G on the picture gallery yet, its the immaculate green metallic long wheelbase.

thanks Frannie.

Re: intermitent starting fault

call Ian at N&D motors in Park royal,0208 965 3827. Tell Ian of Purple inc sent you and get him to have a look. Let me know when if you book it in and I'll go down and browse round it 2. Nice example I have to say. Looks good in the picutres.

If he is busy ask him to give you Trevor the mobile electricians number. He live's in Twickenham area or wimbledon.

when its stars does it chuck out black smoke. Could be the cold start valve.

Re: intermitent starting fault

:D Hi Peter, thanks for your quick reply. As far as I know there is no black smoke on start up, the G will start fine 9 times out of ten ie early in morning, cold etc , then you get in and there's nothing, just a click. Its annoying because I'm having to go out and start the car before I go to work to make sure my wife can take the children to school. I will have to contact the mobile guy as cannot get over to Park Royal during week.

regards Frannie

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH!!!!!!!!!! A BMW 2000 Touring :D :D

That brings back memories, my parents used to have one of those. Memories of long loooooooooong trips to Italy in it, remember the upholstery getting very hot and sticking to bare legs, those were the days
I loved that car, shame we sold it when it started to rust :(

Re: intermitent starting fault

Hi,

Just wanted to let you know that my 1988 300GD has a similar starting problem. It seems to be worse now that the mornings are very cold, but I think it is something to do with a flat spot on the starter motor. If I roll the vehicle forward a couple of inches and give it another go, it usually works. Also, sometimes it is just a matter of turning the key and holding on. Bloody annoying though, so need to get this fixed - anymore ideas?

Thanks,

Re: intermitent starting fault

Ah yes the starter motors on your g are the piggy back solenoid type meaning they are little cylinder on the side this actually spins the drive cog forward to engage the flywheel. they do get gummed up with clutch dust especially if they are full of grease that gets stiffer when its cold and the little cog does nt fly back and forth like its supposed to, they need removing and cleaning with something like "GUNK" or even WD40. good idea to have it checked while its off I had mine rebuilt while it was off by a "windings" company for £50
Ive tried to make the reply "not too technical"

Re: intermitent starting fault

Frannie,
Re cleaning starter solonid, or any other electrial bits, incl central locking solinod, as above.
Anyway use brake cleaner, it flushs the gunk out without leaving any residue -- I saw it being used to effect a "miracle" cure on a seized-up central locking system, and was advised to use it for such applications -- rather than WD40 or anything "oily"
P.S. if replacment central locking solinod required, and the Merc bit is very expensive ? -- it might be worth taking the old unit to a decent motor factor -- fair chance they will recognise it as being fitted to some other vehicle, especially if they are prone to failure !

Re: intermitent starting fault

I do agree with marcus about the electrical bit but the pinion in the starter will need relubricating properly after cleaning I forgot to add, not entirely sure what they use in the factory though.
Before doing my degree I was a chippy and a locksmith qualified on locks not safes and was always trying to get across to people not to use oil or even wd40 on their locks to lubricate. I used to use wd40 to clean only then use a spirit to remove residue and then only use powdered graphite to lubricate oils do more damage as they harbours dust and grit which then clogs and wears.

Re: intermitent starting fault

Thanks very much for the untechnical suggestions. It sounds right and fairly simple to resolve. I'll have a look and report back.

Thanks again - the GWOA is great!!

Re: intermitent starting fault

Hi again,

Now, I realise that this might sound stupid, but can somebody please give me some suggestions as to where to find the solanoid on the starter motor and whether or not this is a job I can do myself. The central locking is also a bit hit and miss, so any pointers as to how to deal with that would also be greatly appreciated.

I think I need pictures and words of no more than 2 syllables!!!

Thanks again
