Just purchased a Swiss 1990 463D Puch G in Bonn- rebadged a Mercedes 300GD!
Being new to the G world, following a series of W124s, I've lots of questions but two to start with.

1. Where can I get a roller blind luggage area cover? I really don't want to go down the tinted widow route but need to secure contents when in Dublin.

2. It's on 16" steel wheels with no arch ext. While I like the utilitarian look i wouldn't mind going for the extensions/alloys at some point..when the credit card has recovered.
Will the road ride be effected by wider rubber etc.

Any advice on the above would be most welcome.

Wonderful to have access to such rich vein of information.

Thrilled so far with Puch G.
All the best

Shame that your Puch was rebadged as a Mercedes! I have been trying to rebadge mine as a Puch but the prices for the badges are simply extortionate!

I assume that your G is a LWB. I have naver found a luggage cover at a decent price for any G-Wagen and I believe that it was never made by MB. I believe that ORC (http://www.orc.de ) made them for the LWB at some point but they were extremely expensive.

My 1991 300 GD has also the narrow axles without the flared wheelarches and it originally came with the 6" wide steel wheels, as yours. There is no problem associated with fitting the wheelarches and wider wheels other than the financial one. You can find the rubber wheelarches at ORC as well, but they are pricey. But there is nothing to be gained, other than the looks. I opted for just fitting the 6x16" wide alloys at the car looks much better without a lot of cash spent.

Thanks for that.
Yes it is a lwb.
I'm going to try to get in contact with the original Swiss owner and see if he still has the original Puch badges.
Pity there is no luggage cover available. What do all you folks do when you go on holidays in your G?
There has to be a rollerblind device from some other source that could fit.
Like from a W210 estate? ML?

Cargo cover

Mercedes did in fact manufacture a luggage cover for the G - well it is in the EPC anyway - I also have a G brochure which shows, what appears to be a combined luggage cover and dog guard combined in the same unit (although I haven't seen this in the EPC). I am not at home at the moment but I am sure that some other industrious reader can check it out. Coincidentally I noticed that there are some Luggage covers listed on the MB Secondhand/refurbished/seconds parts site. not sure what they are but worth a look. http://www.mbatc.de/english/index_e.htm

I hope that this helps

There is a cover for a LWB for sale here on AutoScout

I'd love to get one for the SWB if anyone comes across one... but the only SWB that I have seen them with factory installed had completely different wheel arches on the inside - they had built in storage to which the cover was fitted.

MB did make a cover as my G was fitted with one. It slides both horizontally and vertically to stop stuff flying forward.
I've always though that concealing stuff in a car is worse than leaving things exposed as potential theives will break in to see what is hidden then decide not to steal it, whereas if they can see in then they can make that decision and walk on
