Hello everyone,
1988 swb 300gd with a noisy gearbox. It is noisy when the g is at tickover and the clutch is not pressed. When I press the clutch the grouling noise dissappears. Also when I rev the engine it goes away a little.
I wonder is there a problem with the gearbox or maybe clutch release bearing?
Any help would be much appreciated,

noisy gearbox

Hi this seems to be a common problem on 5 speed 300gd's the box in mine has been noisy for a couple of years getting slowly worse. I've just removed it and fitted a 4 speed which is nice and quiet. Every 300gd 5 speed I've heard has had a rattly gearbox to some extent I'm told even rebuilt boxes are still noisy. My box was very noisy before I removed it noisier than the engine but was still working fine.
Hope this helps
David

noisy gearbox

I believe that this is due to having fitted the wrong clutch. Plenty of people do it and then they blame the design of the gearbox.

The right clutch for the diesel (300 GD) is reinforced and has, I believe, some springs to prevent vibrations.

But I stand to be corrected on this or any other one...
