I am thinking of importing a 2000-2002 G400 or G500 from Germany and was wondering if anyone can assist with the following questions:

Are either of the engines prone to problems - it will have done something less than 125,000km and I am planning on running it for the long term but only doing about 10,000km per year. I thought I read something about the 400 engine to the effect that it had problems at about 100k;

Which it the best – it seems to me that the diesel will last longer and be better on fuel economy, however the 500 is a beast but not as much so as the 55;

When did MB start putting in their own interiors – I read somewhere that pre ’99 500s have an AMG interior which is far better than the one now fitted by MB (there were a number of complaints on a US website when the 500 was launched over there;

What are the relevant dates when the upgrades came out, indicators on wing mirrors etc;

Is it easy to import a G from Germany and register it. I know I will have to change the headlights but are there another things to watch for?; and

Any other tips comments?

I would be particularly interested to hear of any 400 or 500 owner’s experiences.

Thanks in advance.

G500 everytime. G400 , be it on your own head.

If you have read the american threads then you should have made your mind up by now. Buying a G wagen from Germany is easy. Its all a legal binding contract and the seller has to disclose all work carried out and any accident damage. They shold also arrange tranist plates which can range from 5 days to 30 days and this is a licence as well as insurance for you and the vehilce whilst in Germany and rest of europe I believe.

after 2000 it was niggly electrical problems that hindered the later G's but in all fairness no car these days are trouble free (well maybe Toyota) :cry: . either way keep looking and maybe test drive either 500 or 400 at Wheelhouse in Nottingham before flying out to buy.

Thanks.

I would feel bad going for a test drive when I plan on importing. So a 99/00 500 would be a good buy, perhaps without the command stering wheel and nav etc. What kind of km figure would be good, i.e. how long can 500s go before they start running into problems?

HOW LONG IS A PIECE OF STRING, I CANT TELL YOU HOW LONG A G500 WILL LAST I DONT KNOW ANYONE WHO HAS ONE WITH HIGH MILAGE BUT KEEP UP THE SERVICING ND GUESS YOU WOULD EASILY SEE 300,000 BEFORE ANY MAJOR WORK. ALL DEPENDS ON HOW LONG YOU WANT TO KEEP IT. ITS A LOVE HATE RELATIONSHIP WITH G'S YOU KNOW. WHAT DO YOU WANT TO SPEND.

Up to 40,000 Euros. I am now looking at 96-97 300GDs with about 177k km on the clock. They are very different machines but the latter is 17,000 Euros. I want something that it reliable and will last. I have also seen the 500's fuel figures which don't make for pleasant reading. I have not heard of any problems with the 300 engine.

in that case go for the 177BHP 300GTD. A good choice
