im using a 75% veg oil to 25% min diesel mix at the moment and would use a 50% mix in the cooler months. Ethanol/Methanol would be good mixers except that they dont form a stable fuel and could separate- however they are used to make 'biodeisel' through transesterification ( mixing with sodium hydroxide to form sodium methoxide, then mixing with veg oil) which removes they glycerine component of the veg oil. it is a far more involved process and does produce a consistent product -but the fact is, that straight, clear and filtered veg oil is a great fuel without the need to do this and the glycerine componet has some value as a fuel anyway- why chuck it out? the problems with veg oil, as i have already mentioned, is its viscosity at lower temperatures and in cold engines- mixing with diesel or running a twin tank system gets around this and makes full use of the oil. We do also add a detergent and acetane improver. hope this is of some help glad to answer any more points, oh and dont forget to pay the customs their share- 27.1ppl on veg oil

we now have a little group of older mercs running on our veg oil bends( at 75% veg oil, )including three 300gds. General consensus is that they all have more power and run smoother.

Veg oil

I am currently running my G on 100% veg oil , i Ihave been using this all summer with no problems at all. I started using veg oil in winter mixed 50/50 with diesel if i put a higher ratio of veg oil in it took longer to start and was very slugish until it reached operating temp, The 50/50 mix was fine exept when the weather was really .I have experimented with various types of veg oil ,and i reckon pure rapeseed oil to be the best, Ihave found that some of the cheaoer oils are a mixture and seem a bit thick ,I am currently using Somerfields own brand at about 47p a litre ,smells good too .

nick, i would urge caution at 100% .you will do harm in the long run as you will foul the injectors, foul the valves , contaminate your lube oil, and glaze your bores- especially without any additives in your oil- we have been monitoring our own engines and 100% is not good news without a twin tank system. If you are sufferring from lumpy cold idling and sluggish performance then just think of all that unburnt oil swilling round in your engine- its does happen to a lesser extent even in summer.

.... and think of Gordon Brown as the next biggest threat to your wallet (if they catch you first, that is)

jesus, as a 'bona fide' producer of vegetable oil fuels ,i do assure you that the chancellors cut is catered for- as a company trading veg oils we have to be most careful in our records and accounting. We cannot compete with people who do fill up from the supermarket shelves, but at 75p litre duty and vat paid, we certainly are competitive.

Well done, I am also glad to hear that our presence in Irak will continue to be well funded in years to come thanks to your (and my) generous tax contributions...

ah, but you could say if our fuel had come from our fields of glowing oilseed rape or indeed the back of the chippy in the first place, would have gone to iraq anyway ?
